The 1871 Census of Swinton lists George SHORT 79 retired farmer born England; Margaret, wife, 81 b England. Leonard SHORT (son) in same census is 55, a grocer and born in England; his wife is Jane 42; children Margaret, age 25 b England; Jane, 16 b Swinton, Berwickshire; and a Jesse stranghen Clark age 4 granddaughter.
