     John Smith Britten was born on 16 May 1825 at Manhattan, New York County, NY.1 He married Julia Ann Wardell, daughter of Wardell and Eliza Vreeland, on 5 May 1847 at Newark, Essex County, NJ. He married Catharine Lindsley Green, daughter of Green, on 29 April 1858 at Newark, Essex County, NJ. He died on 25 June 1889 at Newark, Essex County, NJ, at age 64 of mitral insufficiency (leaky heart valve), edema and pulmonic apnea (stopped breathing.) He was buried on 28 June 1889 in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark.
     When John S. Britten died at age 68, his occupation was listed as painter and lived at 68 Irving Street, Woodside, Newark, Essex, NJ. He had lived in New Jersey for 50 years.
John's services were held at the Centenary M.E. Church. He is buried in a family plot that he purchased in 1857. At his time of death he was married to his second wife, Catharine L. Green.2

     She left a will on 10 May 1913 at Essex County, NJ. (#2228W WQ7 p44 Pet 56 p424.)2
     Mary Edith Brittain lived at 73 Findly Place, Vailsburg section of Newark, Essex, NJ. Sometime after her husband died, she moved to Ocean Grove NJ to live out her remaining years with her daughter, Edith Marie.
At the end of her life she was in Mercer Memorial Home, Atlantic City, Atlantic, NJ. Mary died of arteriosclerosis and chronic myocarditis. Name variation: Mary Edith Brittain.1 Married name: Vreeland.
