Edward Callanan1
M, b. 1828, d. 24 July 1879
Father | John Callanan |
Mother | Mary Staunton |
Edward Callanan was buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.1 He was born in 1828 at Ballybane, County Galway, Ireland.1 He married Elizabeth Larkin, daughter of Thomas Larkin and Elizabeth, on 14 September 1851 (New York, NY.)1 He died on 24 July 1879 at East River, New York, NY.1
According to his Death Certificate 324-986 in the NYC Archives, Edward was born in 1828 and came to US in 1849. (See Emigrant Savings record)
According to a 'Cousin Mollie' in 1961 letters written to his granddaughter Emma Callanan Roche, Edward was born in Craughwell, Ireland.
She also stated that his father was John Callanan and he was married to Mary Staunton of Claren Bridge. Mollie enclosed in this letter written in 1961 a photo of a thatched roofed cottage in Craughwell 'where Grandpa Callanan was born. He was your Dad's Dad and Grandma came from Clarenbridge. Her name was Mary Staunton. I remember both of them. The house is on the road side and the building on the left was their saw pit, as they called it. They earned money for sawing timber. (The) saw mill, it's turned into a barn now. My brother Patrick is at the door- all the stables are in the back... I gave my brother Patrick your letter to read. He said to tell you there is a special stone in the wall opposite the old home of Callanan and Grandpa Callanan's name ..carved on it. ... It's Monahan's home now - my brother Pat, his wife and daughter live there now. He would not leave it for love or money. He told me to tell you that his grandgfather was the first man in Ireland who made the wheel of a common car- I mean 'Horse's Car'. The Scotch man was the first ever, but grandfather John Callanan invented it first, and Granded copied it from him, he was a famous carpenter.'
From the letters, it appears that John and Mary also had at least one other child, named Winifred, who remained in
Ireland, most likely Mollie's ancestor, so Callanan was probably not Mollie's surname (was it Monahan?) and definitely not her married name.
From the Test Book records of the Emmigrant Savings Bank, Book 1, NYPL extracted 9/12/97, #6125 Dec. 29, 1853:
Account opened for Edward Callanan, carriage maker and his wife Elizabeth living at 289 9th St. ' A native of Ballybone, 3 mi. from Craughwell, County Galway Ireland. Arrived 1 Aug.1848 on the ship 'Niagara' from Liverpool. His parents in Ireland, John and Mary Stanton Callanan. He is married to Elizabeth Larkin.'
Edward gave the Bank a more specific location of his home in Ireland -
Ballybone, 3 miles from Craughwell.
Married to Elizabeth Larkin 14 September, 1851, living in New York city and employed as a coachmaker, the New York City Directories listed his addresses between 1854-1872;
1854-55 Callanan, Edward coachmaker 229 Mott St.
1855-6 Callanan, Edward groom h. 143 E. 21 St.

It is possible that by 1869-70 Edward had turned over the carriage building business to his son John. It is known that sons Michael and Thomas were also in the business.
Edward's death certificate states 'On 24 July, 1879, aged 53, he was found on 72nd ST. and Ave. A, the victim of accidental drowning in the East River, according to the results of an inquest.' (Death Certificate 324-986). His granddaughter Nola Kenworthy recalls that it was said in the family that he enjoyed swimming in the East River. There was no obituary in the NY Times but it was recorded there that the weather on that date was very hot.
His home was located where the Cornell Medical Center is now, 433E. 72nd Street. He was buried in Calvary Cemetary, and reburied Plot 202, Section 9 in 1887 when his wife, Eliza Larkin Callanan purchased a larger family plot.

Elizabeth Regina Callanan was born on 22 April 1895 at New York, NY.1 She married Francis Michael Lavelle, son of Peter J Lavelle and Mary E Bowe, on 25 June 1921 (Church of the Ascension, 107th St., NYC, NY.)1 She married Timothy Eugene Cohalan circa 1941 (,NY.)1 She died on 12 April 1978 at New York, NY, at age 82.1 She was buried on 15 April 1978 in the Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.1
Lil, or Liz as she was sometimes called, attended Hunter College High School and graduated from Hunter College with a science degree in 1917. She had already met Francis Lavelle through his sister Rose, a fellow Hunter College student, before he went overseas in WWI. She and her classmate, future bridesmaid and lifelong friend Gladys Smith, took the very demanding 3 day test required by NYC to be certified to teach in the school system and she scored near the top (according to Gladys, who said that in those days to even get to take the test you had to be related to a priest or politician). Peter Lavelle, her future father-in-law had been a member of the Board of Education of NYC from 1912-1916, probably through the influence of his brother, Monsignor Michael Lavelle, rector of St. Patrick's Cathedral.1 Married name: Lavelle. Married name: Cohalan.

According to the records of the Emigrant Savings Bank, stored in the New York Public Library, John Callanan and Mary Staunton were the parents of Edward Callanan, who emigrated in 1848. Edward stated he was a native of Ballybane, three miles from Craughwell, County Galway. . John and Mary had at least one other child Winifred, who remained probably to marry a Monahan and raise her own family in Gregg Craughwell, according to family correspondence.
Letters to his great-granddaughter Emma 'Tommee' Callanan Roche dated 1961 Gregg Craughwell, County Galway from a cousin Mollie Monahan (married name unknown) stated:
'I am enclosing pictures of our 'old sweet house' the same house that Grandpa Callanan was born in. He was your Dad's Dad(acutally her grandfather's father), and Grandma came from Claren Bridge, her name was Mary Staunton - I remember both of them.
The house is on the road side and the building at the left was their saw pit, it's turned in to a barn now. It's Monahan's house now. My brother Patrick, wife and daughter live there now- he would not leave it for love or money. He told me to tell you that his grandfather was the first man in Ireland- John Callanan invented it first, and Grandad copied it from him, he was a famous carpenter and he owned a sawpit, they earned money from sawing lumber. There is a special stone in the wall opposite the old home of Callanan, and grandfather Callanan's name printed on it.1'
