Holden is a very ancient name, possibly of Danish origin, in England and Holland. In England it is common to several places. Richard and Justinian were from Lindsey in Suffolk, 15 miles north of Bury St. Edmonds. Lindsey is a small unimportant parish once devoted to the manufacture of cloth.
The Hioldens of Sussex or Kent are probably the progenitors of the Holdens who settled in southern New Jersey from whom descended the so-called Cape May family.1
