5May1862 a son? who may have died at birth when his mother died?

BIOGRAPHY: Anton's father was the innkeeper and postmaster of Sandizell. He became a Metzgermeister
(Master Butcher), probably there. As he was a prosperous man (nicknamed 'Goldene Antony')
he was able to become a Bu'rgerlicher Mertzgermeister in Schrobenhausen, probably after establishing himself in Lauterbach, where he married Veronika and where his daughter Anna was born. This means he had to become a Burger (citizen) of Schrobenhausen by paying a fee in order to establish his
business there. A sign of his prosperity is that he had his portrait painted (wearing a golden
earring.) This portrait now hangs in the Kneissl family home in Fu'rstenfeldbruck. He could
have had it painted by the now famous German artist Lenbach, who was also from
Schrobenhausen, but instead chose another.

BIOGRAPHY:Anton was born in 1827, the year that Beethoven died.
At the age of 1 year in 1828, he was given a handwritten prayer book. In this he added his
prayers to his own dead- His first wife Veronika who died 24 Feb.1864 at 6:45 in the evening,
his two infant daughters both named Adlheit, and his brother Raimund who died 25 Mar.1858.

BIOGRAPHY: His second wife wife Ottilie had no known children, but she helped raise his only surviving
child Anna (#31).

BIOGRAPHY: Anton did not approve of his daughter's suitor Andreas Kneissl. Andreas was a rope maker, the third and youngest son in his family, so perhaps Antony felt that he was not good enough for his only
child. Both families lived in Schrobenhausen, but Anna and Amdreas married in Palling bei
Traunstein (an elopement?).

BIOGRAPHY: Andreas set up his Seileri (Rope making business) in Schwabmu'nchen near Augsburg - his
bride Anna said she it was like a foreign country (the dialect was Schwabian, not Bavarian).
Andreas's stepfather, Phillip Dollinger, was still probably operating the Selerei in Schrobenhausen
at this time.

BIOGRAPHY:
Perhaps to get back in her father's good graces,Anna named her first child after his second wife,
Ottilie. Ottilie was born in Schwabmu'nchen, and it was not until 1892 when presumably Andreas' stepfather died and he was able to take over the rope making business, that the family came back to
Schrobenhausen and Andreas took over the family Selerei there.

Antony, if not happy about his son in law, must at least have approved of his eldest
grandchild Ottilie's choice of husband. Johann Kneissl was Antony's nephew, the son of his
brother Xavier. The couple had to have a Papal dispensation to marry since they were first
cousins one removed. Anton showed his approvel of the match by buying them the BrauMichl
an Inn in the center of Schrobenhausen as a wedding present.

BIOGRAPHY: Another indication of Anton's wealth was that he was a Privatier (a retiree)- he could afford it in a time when many could not.In his old age he became blind. He died at the age of 79 in
Schrobenhausen, outliving his son in law Andreas by five years.

BIOGRAPHY: According to Hubert Klebel, he held mortgages on properties in the area, including some of his relatives, because Hubert's grandfather spoke of Antony coming around to collect money due to him.

Hans Kneissl(349), a first cousin of Anna Kneissl Hofstetter, had been a (Oberamtsrat) chief county official in Utting and when visited in 1981, was the first to show his Ahnentafel Book. It was required of all in the military, universities, etc. by the Nazi regime that one's ancestry be confirmed in official records. When approved (showing there was no Jewish ancestry)it was stamped with the official Nazi swastika symbol. Hans provided an enormous amount of Kneissl data for this genealogy with the information it contained on the Kneissl ancestry, but said that because of the swastika, many people threw these booklets away when Bavaria was occupied by the U.S. Army after WWII.
He was the eldest Kneissl present at the Kneissl family reunion (Treffung) in 1989, and of all the Kneissls in his generation was outlived only by his cousin Anna (14)in Baltimore.1

BIOGRAPHY: Xavier was an innkeeper in Sattelberg. He sold this, and bought another in
Grimoldshausen, from which his oldest daughter married Kaspar Stegmeier. Then he sold
this inn and moved to Schrobenhausen, where his son Johann met and married Ottilie
Scha'fer, and where he retired. He is buried in Tandern, where his son Xavier had an inn
at the time.
Xavier's first wife, mother of Johann (#14) died at 44 after the birth of her sixth child,
who also died.
Xavier's second wife, Maria Siegel bore him two children, Ottilie and Teresa.
Her first
daughter,Ottilie Kneissl married Anton Schafer, brother of Ottilie(#15)-so Johann(#14),
her half brother was a brother in law to Anton Schafer in two ways- as his wife's brother,
and his half-sister's husband! Untangling the Kneissl-Schafer relationships was quite a
task. No wonder Anna (#7) as a child just addressed all her relations as Herr Fetter and
Frau Bas (Mr.Cousin and Mrs.Cousin)!
Teresa, second child of the second marriage never married. She lived in the U.S. for
many years. Resi, as she was known, gave a cuckoo clock to Anna Kneissl and George
Hofstetter as a wedding present when they married in Brooklyn in 1927. It entertained
their children and grandchildren, and now hangs in the home of their greatgrandchildren,
Elizabeth and Julia Goedeke in Harmonyville, Pa.

On our 1981 visit to Schrobenhausen, we took two of the
sisters, Lene and Babette to visit their sister Sr. Irmine at
the convent in Neuburg where she was the gardener (every window
box was overflowing with geraniums), and we had coffee and cake after the visit to the
cemetary. The sisters told of growing on a farm as part of a large family. Whenever their
mother had
a new baby, an older girl was assigned to take care of it- once when one died, his
assigned sister was found crying bitterly, and one of her sisters said, 'Don't cry, you can
have mine to take care of.' To which her sister replied,'
