He was an active participant in the 'Company of Foreign Countries' formed to find a different way to the Indies. They first attempted to sail a northern route but were stopped by ice. In 1609 they employed Henry Hudson to sail westward in the Half Moon when he discovered the Hudson River. This led to the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.1 He immigrated in 1635 to New Amsterdam.1
