John Thorp

M, b. 27 March 1788, d. 26 June 1868
FatherPeter Thorp1 b. 1 Jun 1759, d. 2 Oct 1823
John Thorp was born on 27 March 1788 at Marlborough, Ulster County, NY.2 He married Maria Lent, daughter of Hendrick (Henry) Lent and Margarita Lent, in 1812 at Marlborough, Ulster County, NY.2 He was buried in June 1868 in the Old Hook Cemetery in Westwood. He died on 26 June 1868 at Westwood, Bergen County, NJ, at age 80.2
Montross family history lists eight children with Maria Lent, the youngest of which is William, the only child who remained in touch with his father after he remarried and moved to New Jersey. We know that his second wife who may have been either Maria Hopper, or Maria Blauvelt, was described as much younger. The Montross family history states he married 2nd Maria, and had Mary E. Thorp who married Aaron Tuers of Bergen. The Blauvelt Genealogy gives his second wife's name as Mary Blauvelt, daughter of Cornelius Blauvelt, mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Abraham Blauvelt.

Burial site is in older part of Westwood Cemetery (Old Hook Cemetery), near other Blauvelt graves, but in the Richard Hopper section, and the headstone is nearly unreadable. (EJT) Excerpt below provides brief bio from Sixth Generation

Maria Lent m. 1812 John Thorp b. 2i Mar. 1i88 in Marlborough Town, Ulster Co., N.Y., son of Peter and Jemima (Turnere) Thorp;* John d. 26 June 1868 on his farm in Westwood, Bergen Co., N.J; bur. Old Hook cem., Westwood, in the Richard Hopper plot. John married (2) Maria (Mary) ........ and had dau. Mary Thorp, who m. Aaron Tuers of Bergen Co. and lived in Westwood and Ramapo, N.J.

Shortly after the marriage of John Thorp and Maria Lent, John enlisted to fight in the War of 1812. He served as a private in the 9th Regiment New York Artillery (Militia) in Capt. Thomas C. Butler's Company and was stationed in forts of New York harbor. For his services he received land warrants. Returning to the vicinity of Peekskill, NY he and Maria resided there until about 1825, when John's church membership was transferred from the Dutch Reformed Church there to the Presbyterian Church in Yorktown, Westchester Co, The records of the Presbyterian Church there under
date of 6 Feb. 1825 state: "Mr. Thorp appeared and produced a certificate of admission from the Dutch Church, Cortland, and requested to become a member. Request granted",

But John Thorp found little comfort in the Presbyterian Church, as an entry of 13 May 1821 shows: "Mr. John Thorp having conscientious scruples on the subject of infant baptism requested dismission with a view of joining our brethren of the Baptist denomination in New York City." The Thorps lived in New York City until a short time
before 1832, when John obtained, by claims growing out of his war service, a grant of land near Spencer, N.Y. While they lived there, Maria died shortly thereafter.

John subsequently moved to Washington Township, Bergen Co., N.]., and purchased several small farms near Westwood. He married again, his second wife
being named Maria also. Her surname was probably Hopper, since John was buried in the Richard Hopper plot in Old Hook cemetery, Westwood,

John's second wife was much younger than he, a circumstance which may have contributed to a rift between John and his children by his first wife, except William, the youngest. This rift was due also to the fact that John's strictly orthodox religious
views antagonized most of his older children. William remained closer to his father and became a Baptist preacher.

HIs will was dated 29 Feb 1868, proved 6 July 1868. He passes over all of his chidren except son William and daughter Mary. John's real estate was sold for $4000. It consisted of four tracts of land in Washington Township, Bergen County, NJ.2

M, b. 1 June 1759, d. 2 October 1823
FatherJohn Tharp1 b. 1720
Peter Thorp was born on 1 June 1759 at Bottle Hill, Madison, NJ.2 He died on 2 October 1823 at 14 Clarke Street, New York City, NY, at age 64.2
Peter Thorp (Tharp in his pension papers) was b. 1 June 1759 at Bottle Hill (now Madison), N.J., son of John Tharp of Rahway, N.J., and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Frezier. He d. 2 Oct. 1823 at 14 Clarke St., New York City. On 16 Aug. 1785 he married (Elder Abingdon, Baptist minister at Platekill, Ulster Co., N.Y., officiating) Jemima Turnere b. 20 May 1764, dau. of Edmund and Hannah (Brouwer) Turnere of Newburgh, N.Y. Jemima d. 1841 in New York City.

Peter and Jemima lived in Marlborough town for about 5 years; from 1790 to 1809 at Newburgh, N.Y., where they were members of the Old School Baptist Church; and in New York City, where he taught school on Hudson St. for years and where "our beloved sister Jemima Thorp" was a member (6 Oct. 1838) of the North Beriah Baptist Church.

Peter enlisted during the Revolutionary War on 20 Jan. 1777 in the 3rd Regiment, New Jersey Line, and was in active service for about 2 years. He applied for a pension 1 Apr. 1818 at Essex Co., N.J., and received $8 per month. His application stated that he had received badges of merit but that he had had the misfortune to lose the papers. On 13 July '1820 he wrote the Pension Board from Newark, N.J., reciting that he was a resident of Rahway, N.J; was 61 years old the 11th of June last; and that for 25 years he had been sorely afflicted with rheumatism and sciatica; that he formerly taught school but by reason of weak eyes had been obliged to quit sometime in the summer of 1818, after which he undertook to mend shoes for his neighbors but could not follow it; that his wife Jemima was a cripple, occasioned by a fall from a horse bv which she broke her collar bone and dislocated her right shoulder and wrist; that she often got some kind neighbor to wash for her, as she was not able to do much work herself; that they had, for many years before he drew a pension, been helped by public but chiefly by private charity, but with his pension he rents a small tenement for $20 per annum; tends a garden, and by using strict economy they lived in a degree comfortable, but should his pension be stopped they should inevitably fall victims to public charity. Accompanying this statement was an inventory of his personal possessions with a total value estimated to be about $50. A few of the items listed follow: 1 gum table; 1 cherry stand; 1 school desk and stool; 1 common carpet wove by my son-in-law and by him given to my wife; 14 old chairs; 1 small
Bible given me by the Female Bible Society before I obtained the pension; lasts and tools for mending shoes; small grind stone; churn; various pots, kettles, griddles, etc; washing machine; pine wash tub; pepper mill; earthen pots; 3 pewter plates; 2 earthen plates; 12 tea cups and saucers; various jugs, spoons, etc; 1 psalm and prayer book; 1 sermon book; 1 book on navigation; 1 book on Arithmetic; 1 small dictionary; 1 Clark's magazine; Pope's Essay on Man; the 21st vol. of Manor's Treatise; the 1st vol. of the Guardian of Youth; in numbers; 8 fowls with about 30 chickens; spectacles and iron
case; 1 snuff and tobacco box; 1 sun glass; 1 slate and pencil; 1 red morocco pocketbook; and many other articles of a like nature, meticulously listed down to the last 2 lin cups.

On 28 Dec. 1838 Jemima Tharp (her mark) appeared before Marine Court of the City of New York in order to obtain benefit of the provisions of the Act of 7 July 1838 entitled "An Act of Congress granting half pay and pensions to certain widows". She supplied the date of her marriage and the date of her husband's death. Henry C. Thorp of New York, N.Y., on the same day introduced a leaf from the family Bible of Peter Tharp, deceased, which leaf gave the names and birth dates of each of the 10 children of Peter and Jemima.

Isaac S. Tichenor

M, b. 1832, d. circa 16 August 1898
FatherTichenor
Isaac S. Tichenor was born in 1832. He married Mary DeForest Hawley, daughter of Joel Edwin Hawley and Miranda Orcelia Phillips, on 3 July 1860 at Ithaca, Tompkins County, NY. He died circa 16 August 1898 at Washington, DC. He was buried in Arlington.
     Isaac's obituary read as follows:
A LIFE FULL OF PURPOSE - Death of Colonel Isaac S. Tichenor After Long Illness; A Gallant Soldier and Former Auditor of the District -- Widely Esteemed and Popular.
'A well-rounded and successful career was closed last night, when death claimed Col. Isaac S. Tichenor, formerly Auditor of the District of Columbia, and for many years prominent and popular in the national capital. Col. Tichenor had been in poor health for several years. A few weeks ago his malady took a more severe turn, and resulted as stated.
He was a native of Trumansburg, NY, where he was born 69 years ago. When the war broke out, he enlisted in 1861 in the 105th, NY Volunteers, and was made a Captain a year later for distinguished gallantry at Bull Run. His heroism at Chantilly made him a Lt. Colonel, and he was made a Colonel in December 1862, for brilliant services at Fredericksburg.
When the war closed, Col. Tichenor was given an appointment in the office of the third auditor of the Treasury, where he remained many years as chief of one of the most important divisions. In 1872, he was sent to London as one of the Treasury Department messengers in charge of United States bonds, which had been purchased by a London syndicate headed by the Rothschilds.
While still employed in the Treasury, he was proffered, in 1882, and accepted, the position of Auditor and Controller of the District of Columbia, and retained it until the 1st term of President Cleveland. During his incumbency, the title of the office was changed to that of Auditor of the District. He made many admirable changes and inaugurated the system of keeping the municipal accounts now in use. The Special Comittee of the House of Representatives, appointed to investigate the records of the District, warmly recommended Auditor Tichenor in its report.
Since retiring from the auditorship, Col. Tichenor devoted himself to his private affairs. He was a man of great energy and attractive personality, and enjoyed wide esteem. He was a member of Bunside Post,#8, GAR, and of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, and was prominent in Masonic circles, being a representative of the Grand Lodge of the District; of Harmony Lodge, #17 of Columbia Commandery, Knights Templar, and honorary member of two lodges in England.
He was a graduate of the class of '92 of the law department of the National University, and vice president of the alumni association of the District. Col. Tichenor had resided many years at 1311 M Street, NW, where his death occurred. He leaves a widow and one son, George H. Tichenor, a contractor of this city.
The interment of Col. Tichenor's remains will be made in Arlington Cemetery, but the arrangements have not yet been completed.'
