Father | Abraham Toers1 b. c 1790 |
Mother | Eleanor Van Winkle1 b. 6 Feb 1791, d. 17 Feb 1859 |
Joseph Tuers was born on 25 September 1816. He married Gertrude Welsh on 13 May 1836 at Old Bergen Church.2 He died on 6 December 1895 at San Jose, CA, at age 79.
If Gertrude died in 1854, the child Joseph Marr must have been from a previous marriage of Emma, and thus cannot be a son of Joseph.
According to Barbara Wills, Joseph was a wheelwright and later a fishmonger in Fulton Market, NYC. He went to California in 1850 to start an oyster business in the San Francisco Bay area, and settled in Santa Clara County. He made the trip west with his son John, leaving other children in the care of his mother, Eleanor (Van Winkle) Tuers. As an odd and interesting side note, Eleanor later married BF Welsh, father-in-law of Joseph's first wife Gertrude Welsh.
December 4, 1847, Joseph Tuers, of Jersey City, registered a patent for a device for the improveent of Boats in sailing.

Joseph Samuel Tuers1
M, b. 12 April 1828, d. 23 October 1908
Father | Samuel Jacob Toers2,3 b. 12 Sep 1800 |
Mother | Rachel Ackerman2,3 b. 4 Jun 1803 |
Joseph Samuel Tuers was born on 12 April 1828 at Lodi, Bergen County, NJ.4 He married Lydia Campbell, daughter of Nicholas Campbell and Charity Holse, on 10 October 1852 at 1st Reformed Church, Passaic, Passaic County, NJ, (Romani Bogardus pastor.) He died on 23 October 1908 at Kearny, Hudson County, NJ, at age 80. He was buried in the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Upper Montclair (Section W Lot #3.)4
He was in 1862 a blacksmith.
Joseph Tuers is the 2nd great grandfather of Richard Mann.
Marriage certificate of his daughter held by Richard Mann
National Archives information has supplied everything except for his name. Civil War pension was applied for 3/5/1907 per the Act of 2/6/1907. Mann holds a copy of the application and the Act. The application shows that he was 79 at the time of the application and it was witnessed by Edward Kimble and Peter G Speer who stated they knew him for 20 years. The Notary who signed the application was Henry Speer of Upper Montclair, NJ.
Enlistment papers show that he enlisted in the Army in Paterson, NJ on 9/1/1862. He was a Private in K Company, 25th Regiment, NJ Volunteers. He was discharged 6/20/1863 in Beverly, NJ. He is shown as being 5' 91/2" tall with blue eyes and sandy hair. His occupation at the time of enlistment was blacksmith. I have a copy of his service records dated 6/22/1889. His preliminary pension application dated 3/18/1898 showed his wife's name, marriage date and location and the names living children with names and birth dates. The minister that performed the marriage was Rev Domine Bogardus. The widows application shows the date of death but not the year. Based on the Widow's Act the year could have been 1907 or 1908. I have used 1908 because it appears they were very quick about taking advantage of the pensions when they were approved.
The location of the burial is from the cemetery information. They show the cause of death as a Fistula. He was living in the Soldier's Home at the time of his death.
Civil War pension was applied for in 5 Mar 1907 (2nd great granson, Richard Mann, holds copies). Witnesses were Edward Kimble and Peter G Speer, who knew him for over 20 years. He enlisted in Paterson, Nj on 1 Sep 1862. At the time of enlistment, he was 5 feet, 9 inches tall, had blue eyes and sandy hair.
He was living in the Soldiers Home at the time of his pension application and death.

Maria Tuers was born on 31 January 1833 at Bergen County, NJ.3 She was baptized on 24 May 1833.3 She married Isaac Gilliam.1
Marriage to Isaac Gilliam is frankly a guess based on finding the source, and the age of Margaret Ellen Gilliam, which would make Maria a 16 year-old bride. However, little information is otherwise available other than the mention in the Ackerman Ancestors papers.1 Married name: Gilliam.
