In researching the history of her historic New Milford home, Hedy Grant came across an 1883 deed that referenced as a landmark an “old [African American] Burying ground.” Ms. Grant altered her course determined to find the burying ground, which she did with the help of genealogist and historian Peggy W. Norris.

Hedy Grant is a retired lawyer currently serving her fourth term as a councilwoman in New Milford. She recently coordinated the creation of a Sculpture Garden at the New Milford Public Library. Peggy W. Norris, MS, MLIS, is a librarian retired from the Bolger Heritage Center at Ridgewood Public Library. She has been researching family history for over 30 years and in recent years has been using deeds to solve genealogical problems. She is also interested in quilts and quilt history.
