ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- To pay tribute to Veterans Day and the centennial of the United States’ entry into World War I, an Elmwood Park civic group is hosting a program on Bergen County’s Camp Merritt, the largest Embarkation Camp in the nation during World War I.

On their way to and from the battlefields of Europe, more than a million soldiers were lodged at the 770-acre camp, spanning sections of Dumont, Cresskill,  Haworth and Demarest.

Historians and Elmwood Park residents Joe Suplicki and his wife Peggy Norris will present “Camp Merritt: The Camp Beautiful.” They will share images of the camp, information about its activities, and highlight Norris’ grandfather's journey from Ohio to France and home through Camp Merritt.

The program, which is free and open to guests, will be presented at the monthly Elmwood Park Involved Citizens (EPIC) Meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Elmwood Park Recreation Center. For more information call 201-797-2109.
