John Henry (Jack) Goodman was born on 14 July 1892 at Malvern, Worcestershire, England, (May have lived in Droitwich.)2,3 He married Jessie Irene Truss, daughter of Walter George Truss and Ada Mary James, on 12 April 1914 at Christ Church, Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY, (Rev William Sheafe Chase, Rector

He emigrated on 2 September 1910 from Belle Isle, Quebec, Canada. He was naturalized on 8 June 1921 at Norwich, New London County, CT; Session for Naturalization held at Superior Court June 7th and 8th at 10 A.M. Hon Gardiner Greene, Judge.5
According to notes in his handwritten biographical sketch, John Henry (Jack) Goodman sailed aboard the Allen Line ship "SS Tunisian" embarking from Liverpool, England 25 August 1910. The Tunisian was a primary carrier of British Home Children. These children were forced to emigrate from England, and then bound to work for Canadian families - a practice which went on across the Commonwealth until the early 1960's. Jack was not one of these children, but received a letter in England from John Price, a school friend who had gone to Canada as a child, and offered to assist him to travel to Canada, sending him a ticket for travel from Liverpool to Quebec aboard the SS Tunisian. Jack arrived in Quebec on 2 September. He worked as a farm laborer in Canada for a year. He left Canada via train on 7 September 1911, to arrive in Brooklyn, New York where he found work as a shipping clerk. (See My Life Time by John Henry Goodman, transcribed by Jim Turse & Cindy Goodman Turse. The original is held by Janet Goodman Chapman, Mystic, CT) While in Brooklyn, he met and courted Jessie Irene Truss, the sister of George Truss, a fellow Englishman he befriended and met with a couple of times each week after work.

His WW I Draft Registration Card on June 5, 1917 lists him as living at 9 Reynolds Hill, Mystic, CT while employed by Mr. Albert Haley as a gardener in Mystic. He is described as medium in build with grey eyes and brown hair.6

FatherJohn Henry (Jack) Goodman1 b. 14 Jul 1892, d. 8 Feb 1965
MotherJessie Irene Truss1 b. 3 Mar 1894, d. 14 Sep 1960
Robert George Goodman was born on 1 September 1918 at Mystic, CT. He married Mary Elizabeth Dubourg on 11 September 1946 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, New Orleans, LA.2 He died on 12 September 1996 at Stonington, CT, at age 78 of cancer.3
He was educated in 1936 at Stonington High School. He was a Building Contractor.      He was born in the small house near the river cove on the Haley Estate, Mystic, CT (Now on Seamans Inn grounds)
Stationed in New Orleans while serving in the Army during WW II, there he met and married Mary Dubourg.
His WWII enlistment record indicates that he was a "skilled pattern and model maker", but according to his own story, he began his career building shipping boxes during the war, and after coming home he worked as a shipbuilder at Mystic Shipyard. During the prime of his career as a builder, he built and remodeled hundreds of houses throughout the Mystic and Mason's Island area. He was well known for the quality of his work, and was sought out for custom construction projects in homes and commercial properties. He loved the color orange, and over the years he owned a series of bright orange trucks that were familiar sights. His slogan was "For a good man, call Goodman."

He loved to tell the story of riding out the hurricane of 1938 aboard a boat that he was trying to save. The floodwaters picked up the boat and deposited both he and the boat safely ashore. He also was known to pick up his banjo from time to time, and enjoyed dancing whenever the opportunity arose.

The home he built for his family on Mistuxet Avenue was on land once part of the Denison Homestead where Jack Goodman worked for many years as the caretaker. The land was bequethed to Jack by Ann B. D. Gates the last of the Denison family to live at the homestead.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Mystic; a charter member of Quiambaug Fire Company; and, a member of the Groton Lodge of the Elks.
