     Leander Crawford was born on 2 October 1810. He married Nancy Barkley, daughter of Samuel Barkley and Agnes Mccurdy, on 23 January 1838.1

     As the eldest son of a large family of children, his oportunities for an education were limited to a few months at the district school, and his whole minority was spent in assisting his father on the farm. Leander started on a farm in Searsville, then for 21 years farmed at Collabar. In 1858 he moved to Middletown because of ill health. He was commissioned Lt. in the 28th Regiment of the NY State Militia Infantry on 20 June 1829, signed by Governor Throop. He was director in the Wallkill Bank, from its organization until its close, and was trustee of the village for one term. He was a member and deacon of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church during his residence there for many years, and since his residence in Middletown he has been a liberal supporter of church and kindred interests, and has served some sixteen years as an elder in the Second Presbyterian Church.
