FatherEarly Granger1 b. 1790, d. 19 Aug 1883
MotherMary Dougherty1 b. 1797, d. 8 Dec 1853
James Granger was born on 1 June 1825 at Norfolk, England.2 He was baptized on 25 June 1826 at All Saints, Shelfanger, Norfolk, England.2 He married Hannah (Mary Ann) in 1844 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. He died on 4 February 1850 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY, at age 24. He was buried on 10 March 1852 in the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.3
He was killed at the Hague Street explosion at the location of A. B. Taylor, Esq., a well known printing press manufacturer in Hague Street, and ST. JOHN, BURR & Co., hat body manufacturers. On site were employed about 130 men and boys. Over 50 of them lost their lives when the boiler in the building exploded, shattering windows for many blocks nearby, and causing the building to collapse. Accounts of the explosion vary, but in summary the accident occurred at half past 7, A.M., by the bursting of a boiler of two hundred horse power, in the Printing Press and Machine shop of MR. A. V. TAYLOR, No. 3, Hague Street, within a door or two of Pearl Street. As soon as the explosion took place, the whole building, which was five stories high, was actually lifted from its foundation to a height of six feet; and when it reached that elevation, it tumbled down, crushing amid the ruins a great many people. The exact number we have not yet been able to ascertain. So great was the force of the explosion that fragments of the building were scattered in every direction. Windows in the neighborhood were broken, and a large portion of the front wall of the building was thrown with tremendous force into the houses opposite. Various opinions are afloat in regard to the cause of the explosion, but the most generally received opinion is, that the boiler was imperfect. The proprietors state that it was a new boiler, and that the exceedingly cold frost during the night froze several water lines and caused it to explode when it was fired up this morning. As nearly as can be ascertained, there were a hundred or more persons at the time of the catastrophe scattered through the machine-shop and pattern factory, as well as a bindery, in which a great many men and girls were usually employed.

Originally interred Grave 193, Lot 1899 Green-Wood Cemetery on 10 Feb 1850, and moved and interred in Lot 5546 Section 44 on 20 Mar 1852. Resided at 93 Concord, Brooklyn, NY on date of death.3

He left a will in September 1865. In his will drawn in September 1865, he notes two other daughters, Susan and Harriet, for which we hold no record exept Marie Velardi's unpublished Register for John Granger:

WILL

First, I do hereby order and direct my executors hereafter named to sell all my real and personal estate that I may die possessed of and pay all my just debts and funeral expenses out of the same after my deceased [sic] as conveniently as may be.
Second, I give and bequeath all the remainder of my estate after paying debts and funeral expenses equally between all my children John Granger, Early Granger, Ephraim Granger,Elizabeth Gillen wife of Charles Gillen, Ruth Nostrand wife of Garret Nostrand, Emily Mott wife of Henry Mott and my three daughters in England, Mary Granger, Susan Murdock wife of ---- Murdock and Harriet Bloomfield to them their heirs and assigns forever, so that they share and share alike.
Lastly, I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my two sons John Granger and Early Granger executors to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 13th day of September 1865.
His JOHN X GRANGER Mark.
Mary was born out of wedlock to John and Elizabeth Cobb. We hold a bastardy record from Occold Parish in Suffolk dated 1808, for John Granger to pay support for the maintenance of a female child born to Elizabeth Cobb. Occold lies about 12 miles south of Shelfanger. This John Granger is the son of William Granger and Mary Holmes; Early's older brother. Shelfanger All Saints parish records show that John married Elizabeth in 1811. Three more children were later born to them, John, Early, and Emily. Baptism records only exist for Emily at Shelfanger Particular Baptist. Elizabeth died in 1820.

There is no record of this child coming to America with John and his family in 1830. There are, however, census records of a Mary Granger, born 1808, living in Diss. She shows up in the 1841, 1851, and 1861 censuses, never married, claiming to be born in Shelfanger. She died in 1866. Everett Granger holds copy of death certificate.

Banns were posted for the marriage of John Granger (wid) to Lois Barker (wid) 19 May, 26 May, 2 June 1822, but apparently there was no marriage in 1822 since banns were again posted 9 Dec, 16 Dec, and 23 Dec with marriage being recorded 27 Dec 1827.3,4

Mary Granger

F, b. 14 February 1808, d. 1866
FatherJohn Granger1 b. 18 Nov 1787, d. 1865
MotherElizabeth Cobb1 b. c 1785, d. Jun 1820
Mary Granger was born on 14 February 1808 at Occold Parish, Suffolk, England.2 She died in 1866 at Diss, Norfolk, England.3 She was buried on 13 December 1866 in Diss.4

Banns were posted for the marriage of John Granger (wid) to Lois Barker (wid) 19 May, 26 May, 2 June 1822, but apparently there was no marriage in 1822 since banns were again posted 9 Dec, 16 Dec, and 23 Dec with marriage being recorded 27 Dec 1827.5,6
