John Byington 3d was buried in the Umpawaug Cemetery in Redding.3,2 He was born on 1 September 1740 at Bradford, CT.1 He married Sarah St. John before 1761 at Redding, CT.3 He married Sarah Gray, daughter of James Gray and Sarah Gilbert, on 16 November 1763.3 He died on 19 January 1834 at Redding, CT, at age 93.1
John signed the Redding Loyalist Association but early on joined the patriots and served in Capt. Zalmon Read's company, 5th Regt. Conn. Line in the Northern Department. He enlisted 13 Aug. 1776 in Capt. Elijah Abel's company, Bradley's Battalion, Wadsworth's Brigade, serving at Fort Washington. He was discharged 25 Dec 1776. While the American troops camped at Redding during the winter of 1778-79 he served as conductor of teams. He was appointed an Inspector of Provisions on 13 Mar 1780 and on 19 Feb 1781 he was appointed to collect double assessments levied on delinquents who refused to pay their portion to hire a man to serve on the Conn. line. He was pensioned under the Act of 1818 as a private of the Conn. Line and was granted an annual allotment of $96. His name was placed on the roll 26 Jan 1819 and his pension dated from 25 May 1818. He received $170.83 and was then dropped from the rolls, his service not being Continental.3
