About 1843 Charles obtained a position as a bleacher in a straw factory in Walpole. Afterwards he was employed in the same position in bleaching and pressing bonnets in Boston. He visited a millinery shop one day and observed the process of making women's bonnets. He had the idea that straw braid could also be used for making hats for men. He had some straw braid delivered to his factory and had it converted into straw hats for men. Charles Slocomb was the first to wear a man's hat made out of straw braid. A great demand was created for straw hats and it has grown into a muti-million dollar industry.
On Thnksgiving day 1879 Charles was out hunting and lost his right arm due to a premature explosion of his gun. From then on he discintinued his work and never followed his business again.2 Name variation: Charles Slocomb.2
