The Crispell family came from Artois, northern France, near Belgium. They were small farmers in the mid-17th century who were devastated by long wars of the Fronde. They emigrated to the Palatinate, to Mannheim. Antoine sailed on 27 Apr 1660 with his father-in-law, on the 'Gilded Otter' to Esopus. Later he removed to Hurley, NY. He was first of 'The Twelve' (a patentee) to come to America. There were 12 French Huguenots, including Crispell, Hugo Freer and Abram Hasbrouck who were granted a large fertile tract of land some miles south of Esopus. They named this land New Paltz, in honor of the Pfalz or Palatinate. Crispell never apparently lived in the new settlement but stayed in Hurley.2,1,3 Name variation: Anthony Crispell.3

1880 Fed. census: Household of Benjamin Crispell, Hurley, Ulster County, NY. Household consists of Benjamin, his wife Sarah and their son Homer H.2
1900 Fed. census: Household of Benjamin Crispell, Hurley, NY. Household consists of Benjamin, his wife Sarah and their son Raymond.3
The Crispell File had Benjamin Crispell as a son of John P Crispell, probably based on the 1870 census, where Benjamin lives with John. If so, he cannot be a son of Gertrude, and there has to be another marriage. However, in 1860 and 1850, Benjamin is living with Benjamin Gerret Newkirk. He is the only Crispell in the household, which makes it likely that his parents were either not married, or both died shortly after his birth. In the 1865 NY census, Benjamin (15 y.o.) is living with Charles D. Newkirk as a servant.4,5
