3 May 1775: Association entered into and General Committee elected. Michael Vreeland, from Paterson, was elected chairman. Henry Garritse, Peter Peterse, John Berry, Robert Drummond, Captain Francis Post, Thomas Post, Daniel Neil, Richard Ludlow, Captain Abraham Godwin, John Spier, Jacob Van Riper, Lucas Wessels, Francis Van Winkle, Cornelius Van Winkle, Henry Post, Jr., Dr. Walter De Graaw, John Peer, Jacob Garritse, Jacob Vreeland, Abraham Van Riper, Stephen Ryder.      'Delegates to attend the Provincial Convention at Trenton, on 23 May 1775 to represent said Township (Acquackanonk), Henry Garritse, Robert Drummond, Michael Vreeland, and John Berry, Esquires.'
It met again August 5, 1775 and the same four men were delegates.2
On 28 June 28 1775. Three Acquackanonk militia companies. First: Captain Henry Garritse, Junior; First Lieut. Thomas Post; Second Lieut. Michael Vreeland, Jr; Ensign Abr. Van Houten. Essex County had six companies of militia of sixty-four men each. Bergen County had four companies. The minute men served for four months at a time.6
Michael was one of the executors of his father-in-law's (Gerrebrant Van Houten) will. (See also Nelson's History of Paterson for facts about this man.)7
Michael lived in the stone house between the Boulevard and Passaic River, a short distance south of Twentieth Ave. Until 1893 the cellar excavation was plainly visible. In that house his children were born and there he died. He had a tannery located on the brook running through his property. The Boght Road was approximately East 18th St. 'Henry Post Jr. lived on the Wesel Rd. a few rods south of Market St. Jacob Vreeland was a farmer who lived east of Main Ave. Henry Garritse lived at the northwest corner of Wesel and Clifton Rds. Jacob Garritse lived on the farm, next north, probably.'
Michael Vreeland's house was robbed by the British at the time of Washington's retreat through New Jersey. He had concealed his property and they got only a watch valued at 8 pounds, and a set of 'geers' worth 5 s. He was plundered several times. He also lost two horses worth 18 pounds.2
NOTE: Daniel Coronal Vreeland, Elias Vreeland, Jacob Vreeland, Mary Vreeland, James Vreeland and Garret Vreeland seem to be listed as sons of Michiel Vreeland and Gerritje van Houten, but are more likely to be children of Michael Vreeland and either Mary Coronal or Marcia van Ryper. They are not listed in Pat Wardell's Bergen County Families.8
NOTE: Pat Wardell's Bergen County Families has no date for this marriage, and has different Michaels married to Gerretje and Lena.9 Name variation: Michael Hartmansen Vreeland.10

Michiel Hartmansen Vreeland made a will on 19 March 1762. It was proved 4 Feb 1768 (Abstr. of Wills Vol IV p458, NJ.)7 The older brothers all moved to Acquackanonk, but Michiel remained at Reckpokus, and as his mother sold him the land at Reckpokus where she lived, it is presumed that he continued to live at the homestead.2
Michiel possessed large amounts of property as he settled his sons on various properties. Land at Wesel was purchased from Claes Romeyn and Jacob Symonse van Winkle. He did not dispose of his entire holding in the Acquackanonk Patent, as in the Boght division he owned the 'Drie Hoek' (lot one, West) which was in the neighborhood of the Paterson Iron Works, and at least one other lot which he said 'lays between Simeion Van Winkle's Land and the Bought aforesaid.' His will bequeathed those two lots to his daughter, Beletje. At the time of his death, Michiel still possessed the land at Reckpokus. The executors for his will were his wife, his son Hartman and his sister's son, Robert Sickles. He is described as 'Machiel Hartmanse Vreeland of Gemoenepa in the county of Bergen Yoman.'
To his son Hartman he bequeathed 12 pounds to bar his primegeniture. The will contains the provision 'It is my will & Desire that every unmarried Child of mine shall receive out of my Estate a compleat out sett on the day of their Marriages,' and also 'desiring them to see these presents duly & Faithfully Complyed to & Performed ordering and directing that if any of my children should attempt to take advantage of any Imperfestion herein by Law or otherwise it then is my Positive order & Direction he she or they be utterly and totally Excluded from any and every part or persell of my whole Estate & to be deemed as Refractory.'
The will seems to have been signed a year after it was first dated. It was set aside under English law of primogeniture the eldest son, Hartman, became vested with all testator's lands. The will is recorded in Liber L, page 266, office of Secretary of State, NJ. Nelson page 117.8 Name variation: Michael H Vreeland.5
