     Joel Hotchkiss was born on 18 March 1716/17. He married Mary Sherman, daughter of Daniel Sherman and Mary Bassett, on 5 November 1741. He died in 1777 at Bethany, CT.
     Joel was one of the first Deacons of the Congregational Church in the Parish of Amity and Bethany, CT. He was on the search committee which chose his future son-in-law, the Rev. Stephen Hawley.
The separation of Bethany from the Parish of Amity and Bethany, as a town began in 1803, but was not acomplished until 1832.

     Mehetabel Hotchkiss was born on 14 July 1764 at Bethany, CT. She married Stephen Hawley, Jr., son of Stephen Hawley, Sr. and Mary De Forest, on 25 September 1793. She died in November 1827 at New Haven, CT, at age 63. She was buried in Bethany.
     Mehetabel was the daughter of Capt. Joel Hotchkiss, first of two deacons to lead the search for a minister for their church in what is now Bethany, CT.
As Stephen's second wife, she bore him four children, three ofwhom survived through adulthood.
Two years after her husband's death she moved to New Haven, CT in1806 with her three children and resided there until her death in 1827.
Her sons, Isaac Agur and Joel Edwin, were graduated from Yale College. Married name: Mrs. Hawley, Jr.
