He emigrated in 1624 (aboard ship New Netherland.)⁷ He was a silk weaver. Joris settle in Fort Orange (Albany) in 1624 and left in 1626 for lower Manhattan. He opened the first hotel or public inn. They grew food in their own garden. He bought land from the Indians on Long Island and built the family homestead there.⁶
