GSBC Newspaper Indexes

The GSBC and its volunteers has compiled indexes to three important Bergen County newspapers — which reference the microfilm collection for these newspapers at the Ridgewood Public Library. Titles include the Hackensack Republican (1873-1938), NJ Citizen (1871-1874) and the Bergen Index (1875-1878) microfilm collection at the RPL.

Once you have the information from a index, you can visit the Ridgewood Public Library to use the microfilm on-site for these titles.

If you cannot make it to the Library, scans and extended information are free for GSBC Members and non-members.

Bergen Index, March 1875–August 1885

The first three films of the Bergen Index has been name-indexed spanning March 1875 through August 1885 (with a gap from Mar 1876-May 1877). There are seven films, and the index will be added to when the work becomes available.

Hackensack Republican / Bergen County Watchman / New Jersey Republican, 1870–1936

We are proud to announce that three historical Bergen County newspapers: the Hackensack Republican (Hackensack, NJ, 1878-1936), the Bergen County Watchman (Hackensack, NJ, 1870-1873), and the New Jersey Republican (Hackensack, NJ, 1878), have been indexed by GSBC volunteers. (Note that there is a gap in the microfilm between Apr 1874 and March 1878.)

This was a huge indexing project, spanning five years and more than 2,000 volunteer hours — thank you to our volunteers!

The NJ Citizen Vital Records, May 1871–May 1874

Indexes for Vital Records published in the NJ Citizen cover only 26 May 1871 through May 1874. The index is organized alphabetically by last name.

Hackensack Republican—1924 Index of 1887-88 and 1871-72 City Directories

In 1924 the Hackensack Republican published some articles about entries in the 1887-88 and 1871-72 City Directories—and updated some of the information as well. These pages have been scanned. The index can be found here, and the pages can be found through the links.
