BIOGRAPHY: George Hofstetter
May 7, 1904 - April 17,1980
Georg Hofstetter was born in Aichach, a small walled city in Bavaria ten years before WWI began. His mother had been married to a brushmaker, Josef Jakob and had borne him 5 children (inclu- ding twins.) Josef died when the children were quite small, and in his last illness he urged her to go to Augsburg and see Otmar Georg Hofstetter the brushmaker. Anna saw him, and apparently marriage and taking over the business were discussed. However, she had crooked teeth, and the marriage did not take place until she had had her teeth pulled and new false ones fitted.
Anna had two children by her second husband, a girl Friedl, and three years later a son Georg.
Georg (the e was added when he came to America, but his last name remained the same) went to school until the sixth grade, and then became apprenticed to a carpenter. His older half brothers were already trained as brushmakers to continue the family business under the Jakob name.
When George was 14 in 1919, his father died of influenza in the great epidemic having been weakened as the result of a hernis operation. The older half brothers were still quite young to carry on the brush business, and George and his mother would go into the forests to pick mushrooms or anything else edible. Times were not good - turnips were the staple of everyone's diet.
George's children never had a turnip until they were adults- they were never served in his home in the U.S.!
George's good friend, Tony Schafer, had an uncle Max Schafer, who had signed on as crew on a ship coming from Germany in the early 1900's. Max walked off the ship in New York - many family legends about this - but he did stay, opened a delicatessen in Brooklyn, and retired at 40 on the mortgages he held.
Through Tony's efforts, Max agreed to sponsor George. His mother made him 12 carpenter's apron, sewed shirts, knitted a dozen socks, etc. to outfit him for his journey to the New World- as the youngest son of a poor family, this was his best opportunity.
In 1922, at the age of 18, very thin from a bout of pneumonia, George prepared to leave. In addition to the clothes his mother had made him, he had his inheritance from his father- 18,000 Marks. He wanted a raincoat to take with him, but his mother regretfully said she didn't have the money.
New Yorker 4/28/97, p.190
'In 1923, the year the Frenh occupied the Ruhr, a thousand seven hundred and eight-three German presses ran day and night churning out bills that ended up literally not being worth the paper they were printed on..... The Recihsmark moved from just over four to the dollar in July 1914 to four trillion two hundred thousand to the dollar in November 1923.' In nearby Augsburg, he took the train to Bremen. There, Anna Kneissl 22, a niece of Max Schafer, was also boarding the train.
Her mother said to George about her only daughter, 'Take good care of her!' never suspecting that five years later they would marry.
When they got to Bremen, the raincoat still on his mind, George set out to buy one before he set sail. In the year 1922, inflation was rampant in Germany. A raincoat cost 25,000 Marks! He left without one.
Like so many others, when he was asked if he had a job at Ellis Island, he said yes - and had to remain a day until Max Schafer came to explain that it was a mistake. A few days later, carrying his own tools, he started work at the Steinway factory. He then made the first speaker boxes for Victor when talking movies came to NYC. He spent 43 years with RCA, educated 2 daughters who have masters degrees, and was very proud to be an American. The names of George Hofstetter and Anna Kneissl will appear on the Ellis Island memorial list.

According to a post card from Germany, after their marriage they lived at 447 36th St in Brooklyn.
In retirement, he was a very active member of the Merchantville Shade Tree Commission, and he and Anna took several trips to Germany, England, Greek islands, Western states with his sister from Germany, and enjoyed fishing and Beach Haven. A trip to Africa for their 50th wedding anniversary (1997) was cancelled when he was hospitalized with a colostomy for colon cancer. He continued to battle this desease, having the colostomy reversed in 1978, and again redone less than a year later.
He died at home April 17, 1980 and was buried from St. Peter's Church in Calvary Cemetery. The shade tree commission had a tree planted in front of the church in his memory. He was Type: Record Change on 28 July 1999.
