Elisha COBB was born 6 June 1736 at Eastham (Wellfleet) He was the son of Elisha and Mary (Harding) COBB. Leaving Wellfleet or Barnstable, with one of the Harding families, he came to Gorham as early as 1750. In 1758 he was a soldier in Capt John Libby's Company, Col Prebles Regiment - which regiment served in the French and Indian War, scouting back from the seacoast. I think he was then of Cape Elizabeth. He was a soldier in the Revolution, a private in Capt Hart William's company, Col Phinneys Regiment. In Nov 1760 he married Elizabeth Murch. 25 July 1765 he bought of David Gorham the thirth acre lot, 37, and also a part of 39. Here he made his home. His house was nearly opposite to that of Prince Davis, on the Flaggy Meadow Road (Old Buxton Rd) Children:

From History of the Cobb Family (929.2 c 634h) 'Henry COBB of Barnstable'
Among the earliest settlers at Plymouth was Henry COBB, the ancestor of many of the famly. Just when he came is not recorded, but his name appears in the colony records on a 'List of ratings by order of court jan 1632-3' with the amount of his tax nine shillings. His name is also among the list of Freemen of the Incorporation of Plymouth in New England, AN: 1633. In after years his name appears frequently on the records giving a clear idea of what his position and standing in the community was.
He doubtless had been a member of Rev John Lothrop's church in England, as we gather from what mr. Lothrop wrote in his church records. so that when Mr. Lothrop came to this country, Henry cobb was among the very first who came to his supportand joined him in the planting and establishing of a nre town and church.
John Lothrop, baptized in Eton 20 Dec 1584, was a man of good family and education. After graduating at Queens College where he received BA and MA degrees, he had taken a living in the established church at Egerton, Kent in 1611.Leaving the church to join the Puritans, he became ministed of an independent church in London in 1623. 29 Apr 1632 he and 41 members of his church were thrown into prison for violating the law regarding religious gatherings. Most were kept imprisoned for two years. Upon release, Mr. Lothrop and his family and some of the others came to america, arriving 18 Sept 1634.
The town of Scituate was established before his arrival as he wrote in his records 'The house in ye planta... Situate att my coming hither, onely these wch was aboute end of Sept 1634. Included among them was Goodman Cobbes. He also wrote that 'upon the 23rd of November, 1634 or Brethren at Situate that were members at Plimouth were dismissed from their membership, in case they joyned in a body att Scituate. Uppon January 8, 1634, Wee had a day of humiliation and then att night joyned in covenaunt together, so many of us as had been in covenaunt before. To witt. and among those listed Goodman Cob and his wife (N. E. Register Vol ix, and x)
It appears Henry Cobb had come to America about the time Mr. Lothrop and his flock were thrown into prison in London, and that'he had been in covenenaunt before with them'. He quickly responded to the call of his old pastor and was among those who was most loyal to him. They did not find contidions favorable in Scituate, and in 1637-8 petitioned the General Court and 'complayned that they have such smale proporcons of lands there allotted them that they cannot subsist upon them' (Plym Col Records I-72)
22 Jany 1638-9 A graunt of a plantacon called Seppekann, and the lands thereabouts, for the seatings of a township for a congregation thereis made vnto ....Henry Cobb.... as committees to dispose of such lands lying there abouts as shall be limmitted and bounded vnto them, resercueing a pcell of 300 or 400 acrees for a farme, to be disposed of as the government here shall thinke meete (Plym Col. Rec i 108). Changing their plans they decided not to go to Seppekann (now Rochester), and on 13 june .... they held a fast 'for the presence of god in mercy to goe with us to Mattakeese, later called Barnstable.
In 1636 'Brother Cobb had built a house 'on his lott' at Situate. This is probably the house he later sold to Manasseh Kempton as is recorded in Vol XII of Plymouth records: 'Memorand that Henry Cobb doth acknowledge that for & in consideracon of a sum of twenty pounds sterl one cowe and two goates hath absolutely bargained and sold vnto Manessas Kempton Allthat his house in Scituate outehouses garden place with twelve acres of vpland .......
The church records written by Rev Lathrop also throw much light on the history of this time.... 15 Dec 1635 our Brother Cobb was invested into the office of Deacon......15 Apr 1640 at the investing of Bro Mao upon whom Brother Cobb lay hands.... 24 mar 1640 In regard of england and for others, Brother cooper in office of Deacon with ..brother Cobb laying on hands. Days of Thanks giving..8 Jan 1650 Ffor gods exceeding mercys towards old England in the prosperous good success of the armie there and particularly for their prevail- ing against the Rebells in Ireland, as alsoe their admirable victory against the Scotts, the English being but a leaven thousand att the most (NE Reg IX X)
Deacon cobb's house in Barnstable containing seven acres was situate at a little distance north from the present Unitarian meeting house, between the lots of Thomas Huckins on the north and Roger Goodspeed on the south, extending from George Lewis' meadow on the west to the 'Old mill Way' on the east...His other lands were the neck of land and the meadows adjoining, where Cobb and Smiths whart and stores are now situate...His great lot, containing three score acres, was situate on the south side of the county road between the present houses of Joseph Cobb and james Otis. It was bounded in 1654 easterly by lands of Henry Taylor and Joshua Lombard... Henry Cobb's house lot was rough and uneven, and not desirable for cultivation. His great lot had some good soil. It was a good grazing farm and as the raising of cattle was the principle business of the first settlers, his lands were probably selected with reference to the object. He appears to have built two houses on his home lot. the first was probably a temporary one to shelter his family till he had time and means to build a better. The three deacons of the church had stone houses. It was required that such houses be built in every plantation as a place of refuge from the Indians. It appeared the deacons provided for personal as well as spititual wants of the people. Deacon Cobb built his lot on his lot where formerly a house by josiah Lewis stands - a spot well selected for defense against Indian hostilities. (Barnstable Families, Otis)
Henry Cobb was a right hand man to his pastor. A deacon in 1635, he served in that capacity for nearly 35 years and was elevated to ruling elder 14 Apr 1670. He continued in this position until his death in 1679. He was criticized by otis 'Elder Cobb was not a man of brilliant talants. He was a useful man and an exemplary Christian with but one exception. When in 1657 a spirit of intolerance spread through the Plymouth Colony, and laws were enacted that an enlightened common sense condems and which were in the violation of religious liberty which the fathers had held sacred, Elder Cobb was one of the deputies to the general court and there is no evidence to show he did not approve of their enactment. It would have been better had he retired to private life with a clear conscience and unspotted reputation. Four years were adequate to sweep away every vestage of fanatical and intolerant spirit which had spread over the colony. How could it be otherswise that men who had suffered presecution and imprisonment for conscience sake, and had maintained the God alone was the judge of men's consciences, how could they believe it right to persecute baptists and quakers, and not persecute Puritans? The absurdity of such a course forced itself upon the minds of such men as elder Cobb and soon wrought a change in public opinion.
For many years Henry Cobb represented Barnstable at the general court at Plymouth. In 1644 he was associated with Ant Annable and Henry Bourne; in 1645 with Thomas Hinckley who later became his brother-in-law and governor of the colony; in 1646 he was fined for non-appearanceat the court 'Defects in appearance this court by the matrates and committes, Henry Cobb fv j d' He occupied an honorable position as one of the colony's lawmakers for not less than nine years. He was also one of the three selectmen of Barnstable. In 1664 he was Officer of the Excise. He also served on the 'grand Enquest' as a juror. There was no question but that he was a man of standing and importance, valued and respected by his associates. In view of the respectable position, also a deacon and elder in his church, it is interesting to read the folowing '5 Jun 1644 Henry cobb is lycensed to draw wine at Barnstable (Plym Rec. II 73). A signature of Henry Cobb remains from an Inventory of the estate of Richard foxwell, dated 30 May 1668 (Plym Reg og Deeds)
