     Jeremiah Holmes was born on 31 October 1752 at Plymouth, MA.¹ He married Nancy Robinson on 30 January 1782 at Plymouth, MA.¹ Jeremiah Holmes died on 17 October 1799 at Plymouth, MA.¹ He was buried in Burial Hill in Plymouth.¹

     Maine Families in 1790 Vol 2, Maine Gen Soc lists Jeremiah Holmes b Plymouth MA 31 Oct 1752 son of Jeremiah and Patience Holmes. He died Plymouth MA 17 Oct 1799 (g. s. Burial Hil; Plymouth Co Probate #10450), married in Plymouth 30 jan 1782 Nancy Robinson, daughter of Thomas Robinson (VR) who died Orrington, ME 3 Apr 1799. Jeremiah was of Orrington in 1789 when he and Samuel Bartlett, both Mariners bought land in Orrington bordering land already owned by Jeremiah Holmes. (Hancock Deeds 22:88, 89 dated 15 Sep 1789)

     Probate in Plymouth lists minor children over 14 in 1799 as Nancy and Thomas; children under 14 as Jeremiah and William. His will gives daughter Nancy all her mother's waring apparal, all my silver spoons, rings and jewels, all glassware, a looking glass, a case of draws, one large table, six chairs and one drop kettle and a can in care of Nathanial Harlow, and one note against the said Harlow, six sheep let out to john Hampton, one good bed and bedstead with bolster, pillows, two coverlets and curtainsand a cooper warming pan and a note against Timothy Nye...to my sons Thomas, Jeremiah and William the remainder of my estate to be equally divided among my three sons.

He was born 5 Jan 1728/9 Plimouth (MD 13-35), d 12 Dec 1790 (F.C.Rec 1-418) He resided Plymouth. He married at Plim 12 Oct 1748/9 Phebe Crymble, daughter of Quitton Crymble and Elizabeth Holmes (a cousin) She was born 20 Feb 1732, d 5 may 1815 age 83.

     Plymouth VR records list Jeremiah Holmes born 5 Jan 1728/9 among the children of Ebenezer Holmes JR and Patience Holmes his wife (MD X III, PG 34 1911); 12 Mar 1748/9 the marriage of Jermiah Holmes and Phebe Crymble, both of Plymouth; 29th April 1767/7 a Purpose of Marriage between Jeremiah Holmes and Phebe Crymble, his wife; Phebe Crymble, child of Quitton Crymble and Elizabeth Holmes Crymble, his wife, 20 Feb 1731/2; and birth of children include jeremiah Holmes born 31 Octor 1752 (old stile) to Jeremiah Holmes and Phebe, his wife.¹

     Joanna Sanford Holmes was born on 11 November 1820 at Frankfort, ME.¹ She died on 21 July 1838.¹ She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport.¹

     John Holmes was born on 25 March 1822.¹ He died circa 1826. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport.¹

     John Holmes was born circa 1635/36.¹ He married Patience Faunce, daughter of John Faunce and Patience Morton, on 20 November 1661.¹ John Holmes died in 1696/97.¹

     Documentation for John Holmes (Sr) comes from the Priscilla Jones Collection at Penobscot Marine Museum, taken from Plymouth Records. John Holmes was the son of John Holmes and Sarah. He was born about 1636, died the last of July 1697 (MD 16-16) and resided in Plymouth.
     He married Patience Faunce 20 Nov 1661 (MD 17-183), daughter of John Faunce and Patience Morton. He married second, Patience Bonum Willis.

     VR Plymouth MD XVII pg 183 John Holmes married to Patience Faunce the twentyeth day of November 1661. According to Descendants of John Holmes published in the National Gen Soc Quarterly June 1986, children of John Holmes Sr, namely John Holmes and Nathanial were born in Plymouth.¹

     John Holmes was born on 22 March 1661/62 at Plymouth, MA.¹ He married Sarah Thomas.¹

     John Holmes married Sarah (?)¹ John Holmes died on 13 October 1667.¹

     Most of the information about John Holmes comes from the National Gen. Soc. Quarterly article Jun 1986. Although there were two John Holmes, one a Rev. from Scituate, the other John Holmes, the messenger. This article deals with the latter. He was first recorded in AMERICA 16 Oct 1632 when he purchased a house and six acres on land adjoining Reed Pond from William Palmer for 35 pounds sterling. It might be assumed that being called a Mr and having 35 pounds for a house, a goodly sum in those days, he might have been a man of some position, possibly having come from a family of gentry in England, possibly the 'black sheep of some good family'.
     One writer, George MacKenzie, has John Holmes, gentleman, of Plymouth, as the son of Thomas Holmes of Colchester cO, England who died in 1637 and had children John, Susan and Frances. This may have been Thomas Holmes, maltster, of colchester who dated his will 7 Nov 1637, and named his daughter Susan Morton, grandson Thomas Holmes, the son of John, and his daughter Frances. Written sideways on the will was noted 'to my sonne John Holmes 5 pounds my corslet, pike and all my armor. This of course is not adequate identification. Another clue associating Holmes with Colchester, on 27 Mar 1637, William Spooner of Colchester, Co Essex indentured himself as an apprentice to John Holmes, gentleman of New Plymouth for a term of 6 years starting 1647.
     Another hint that John Holmes was above average means from the 25 Mar 1633 tax ratings where he was one of 22 families rated at 18 shillings. Though he was a man of higher social order, he was not afforded the title of respect afforded to other gentlemen of stature. Possibly because of his behavior, for he appeared several times in the record for public drunkenness. These appearances before the court were not withstanding the fact that on 4 December 1638, Mr. John Holmes was sworn in as Messenger of the Court. The position of messenger involved jobs such as warrent server, jailer and even executioner. Before becoming messenger, John Holmes was involved on the fringes of a well known event in Plymouth when he was a member of a 12-man jury which sentenced Arthur Peach, Thomas Jackson and Richard Stinnings to be executed for the robbery and murder of an indian. The aftermath of the trial occurred when a house servant of Mayflower passenger Stephen Hopkins was found pregnant and named Arthur Peach as her lover. Hopkins refused to keep her in his house any longer and was kept under house arrest until he worked out an agreement with John Holmes that the latter, for 3 pounds, would take Dorothy Temple as a servant in his home for the rest of her term. Other court records show John Holmes fined 20 shillings 1 Apr 1633 and sentenced to sit in the stocks for public drunkenness; 1 Jan 1634 John Holmes was made a freeman; 14 Mar 1535/6 John Holmes was given use of meadow land between Mr Smith and James Hurst; 5 June 1638 he was fined for keeping three swine unringed; 2 July 1638, Mr. John Holmes,gentleman gave a bond of 20 pounds to ensure court appearance of Richard Clough; 5 Mar 1638/9 Mr. John Holmes was charged with taking 5 shillings for wrongfully serving a warrant; on the same day two charges against Mr. Holmes were served - one for drinking inordinately when sent to serve a warrant and for abusing other mens names to pcure wine to drink; 9 Sep 1639 fined 40 shillings for drinking inordinately; 31 Dec 1641 he was granted 40 acres of land at Narragansetts Hill between the highway and Derby Pond (this transaction was essential to prove identity of son John Holmes); he was fined in a complaint against him by John Thompson; he was included in the Aug 1643 list of men 16 - 60 who were able to bear arms; in 7 0ct 1651 he complained against Joseph Warren in an action of battery for 5 shillings and while the jury found in his favor, it awarded him only 10 groats to pay court costs; on the same day he complained against John Doty for tresspass and assault, and again the court found in his favor but awarded him only court costs, saying that Holmes was technically right but the offenses were trivial and alleges he was rather a belligerant man. These records are the last that can be ascribed to Mr. John Holmes with any certainty. In 1657, the name of John Holmes appear on a list of Plymouth men takingan oath of fidelity - this was probably his son. Pope wrote that John Holmes died 13 Oct 1667 but this was based on a record of a town meeting 15 Mar 1702 which stated 'Reed Pond granted to Hohn Holmes of Plimouth deceased on the 13 of Oct 1667. The date could be applied ambiguously to granted or deceased but that it was actually 'granted' can be shown by another Plymouth town meeting record of 13 Oct 1667 which states that a 'priveledge of grass is dranted unto John Holmes at the Reed Pond in case hee can make meddow of the whole pond or any pte thereof is to be his owne. The deceased John Holmes would undoutedly be John Jr., John Sr having been dead by the 1702 town meeting.
     There is no direct exidence that shows John Holmes having a wife or family, nor is it knowh that he brought a wife with him or married in Plymouth. A Mrs. Sarah Holmes died in Plymouth 18 Aug 1650. She was probably the wife of John Holmes. DeForests give him four children: John b 1636; Josiah, Nathanial and Sarah. MacKenzie gave him three children: Nathanial b Plymouth 1643, Thomas b England and John b at Plymouth. Evidence shows his childen to be only John and Nathanial.
     Contemporary documentary evidence shows John (jr) to be the son of John (Sr). It begins with Thomas Holmes who is the son of John Jr. On 28 April 1705, 40 acres of land were laid out to Thomas Holmes that 'was granted to his grandfather Holmes in the year 1641 and ten acres of land it being a part of his 20 acre lot becamse sue him by a settlement of the propriery of the comon land in Plimouth sd 50: acres of land was laid out at a place caled Four Mile Brook. Records showed tha Thomas had bought this land from his older brother John Holmes, who on 20 Oct 1701 had sold his brother all the lands belonging to my honored father John Holmes, late of Plymouth....that is to say more particularly the house lott or homestead on which the said John holmes deceased lived and whereof he died. The deed described some of the lands involved including a grant of 40 acres of land at the Four Mile Brook. As can be seen above, John Holmes the messenger was granted 40 acres of land 31 Dec 1641, the same 40 acres described as having been granted to Thomas' grandfather in 1641.
     John Holmes was born in England between 1583 and 1611 and died after 7 Oct 1751. It is assumed he has a wife Sarah who died 18 Aug 1650. He arrived in Plymouth no later than 1632, and in 1638 became a messenger of the court. He was often styled Mr. or gentleman, giving the impresson he was of a higher social order of his times. The children of John and (possibly) Sarah Holmes were: John Holmes b ca 1636; Nathaniel b ca 1643.¹

     Joseph Holmes was born on 16 May 1739 at Plymouth, MA.¹ He married Rebecca Eanes on 26 November 1769.¹

     Letitia Holmes married (1) Benjamin DeVoe, son of Thomas DeVoe.¹ Letitia Holmes married (2) Abraham Van Houten.¹ Letitia Holmes died circa 1822.¹

     Lydia Holmes married Capt. John Bowne.¹

     Obadiah Holmes was from Massachusetts. He was publicly whipped in Mass. Colony for preaching in private houses on the Lord's Day. He moved to Newport, RI and later to NJ.¹ Married name: Bowne.

     Maria Louisa Holmes was born in 1827.¹ She died on 27 March 1859.¹ She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport.¹

     Mary Holmes was born on 17 March 1756 at Shelfanger, Norfolk, England.^2,3 She married William Granger, son of Mary (?), on 9 January 1784 at Shelfanger.² Mary Holmes died on 9 June 1851 at Guiltcross Union, Norfolk, England, (Death witnessed by Onan Browne.)⁴

     Nathanial Holmes was born on 8 June 1737 at Plymouth, MA.¹ He was baptized on 16 July 1737 at Plymouth, MA.¹ He married Chloe Sears on 17 April 1760 at Plymouth, MA.¹

     Nathanial Holmes was born in 1665/66.¹ He married Elinor Baker.¹

     Nathanial Holmes was born in 1641/42.¹ He married Mercy Faunce, daughter of John Faunce and Patience Morton.¹

     Rodney Arthur Holmes was born on 13 July 1884 at Presque Isle, Aroostook County, ME.¹ He married Eva Evelyn Warman, daughter of George Frederick Warman and Sarah Jane Green, on 31 August 1919 at Houlton, Aroostook County, ME, (by A. M. Thompson, clergyman in Houlton. Newspaper clipping and marriage record lists place of marriage as home of the bride in Houlton, ME, but home of the bride was in Ludlow, ME.)¹ Rodney Arthur Holmes died on 3 January 1952 at Ludlow, Aroostook County, ME, (He was survived by wife Eva of Ludlow, son Pvt Herbert of Camp Edwards, and brother William of Presque Isle.)² He was buried on 5 January 1952 in Fairmont Cemetery in Presque Isle, Donald Dunn Funeral home in Houlton was in charge of the arrangements.¹

     Rodney Arthur Holmes was a manager of the Fish River Mfg Co in Eagle Lake, and had recently returned from overseas where he served in a forestry unit.³
     He was a member of the Blue Lodge of Masons, Royal Arch Chapter of Presque Isle, Commandry of Caribou and Anah temple Shrine of Bangor. He was listed as a veteran of WW I.²

He was born in Plymouth, MA 10 Mar 1785, and died in Frankfort (now Winterport, ME) 11 Feb 1823. The Priscilla Jones Collection at the Maritime Museum, Penobscot, ME list children of Jeremiah Holmes, Jr and Nancy Robinson as Nancy, Thomas, Jeremiah and William. A third documentation, Maine Families in 1790 Vol 2, by the Maine Geneological Society in 1990, lists Jeremiah Holmes and Nancy Robinson as parents of Nancy, Thomas R. born Plymouth 10 mar 1785; Jeremiah, William and Lander, the latter two being born in Orrington, ME.(across river from Frankfort). Probate at the death of Jeremiah in Plymouth list Guardianship of minor children in 1799 over 14 years of age as Nancy and Thomas; children under 14 years of age, Jeremiah and William. Guardianship was given to John Bishop, Gentleman and Rofrater Cotton, Esq both of Plymouth.
     Joan Raia lists the marriage of Thomas R. Holmes to Rebecca Bearse (Beers) probably at Plymouth, MA circa 1804, settling in Frankfort, ME about 1811. Their children are listed as Thomas, b. 16 Oct 1805, probably Plymouth, married Ann Dorr 1824; Jeremiah b 1808, probably Plymouth, married Rachel Webber Knowles, int. 4 Dec 1832; Rebecca b circa 1811 Frankfort, ME, married John Gould, int 18 Jun 1821, Hampden; Nancy, b 10 Nov 1813, married Jacob Conant. (Died 2 Aug 1893); Harriott, b 30 July 1816, NFI; John, buried Oak Hill with his parents, age 4 years; and William, NFI. (Nancy's probate showed this William to be William, 2nd, born about 1811, in Maine, married Emeline COBB in Hampden 24 Oct 1836. Births of Thomas Holmes and rebecca listed in Frankfort by the Town Clerk are Nancy b 10 Oct 1813; Harriott, b 30 July 1816, John b 25 Mar 1822, and William NFI. Thomas R. Holmes is buried in Oak Hill Cemetary, Winterport ME with his wife and son, John. MOCA lists the birth as Plymouth, MA 10 Mar 1785 and death 11 Feb 1823. Rebecca, wife d. 17 Oct 1860 aet 75 years.      The only other information I could locate on Thomas R. Holmes was the 1820 Federal Census: 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 26-45; 2 females under 10, 1 female 26 - 45. As Thomas R. Holmes was deceased by the Federal Census in 1830, no record was found for him or under his wife Rebecca.
     Thomas was born in Plymouth, lived in Orington, ME in 1791-95, returned to Plymouth where he was maried and presumably resided until 1811. He moved to Frankfort, ME (now Winterport) where he died in 1823 nearly 38 years of age.¹

     William Holmes was born on 23 November 1791 at Orrington, ME.¹ He married Joanna P. in 1816.¹ William Holmes died on 23 November 1858 at Frankfort, ME.¹ He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Winterport.¹
