After first working for Browns Cotton Gin in New London (1888 New London Directory), Robert worked as a machinist first for New London Northern Railroad (1892 New London Directory), and then for Standard Machine in Mystic. When his son's doctor advised him to see to it that the boy lived his life in the outdoors, he became a fisherman. Son William, spent most of his life fishing out of Mystic/Stonington, CT.

Robert became a US citizen in September 1890.1
