     Francis Nichols was born in 1595 at England. He married (1) an unknown woman. He married (2) Anne (Anna) Wines, daughter of Barnabas Wines, in 1645. Francis Nichols died in 1650 at Stratford, Fairfield County, CT.

     Francis was the son of Francis Nichols of Ampthill, Bedford County, England, and his wife Margaret Bruce. Francis appears in Stratford, CT., in 1639, among the first settlers.
     He was apparently a widower when he came, and was accompanied by his four children, John, Isaac, Caleb, and a daughter whose name is unknown, and who married Richard Mills, another of the first settlers of the township.
     He married a second time in 1645, with Anna, daughter of Deacon Barnabas Wines, of Southold, L.I., by whom he had a second daughter, Ann. After Francis Nichol's death, his widow was thrice married.
     Sergent Francis Nichols died in Stratford, probably intestate, and it is likely that his property was distributed to his children before his death. The inventory of his personal effects is on record, and amounted to a fairly considerable sum for those early times.
     In the list of owners and inhabitants of Southold, L.I., is found 'Francis Nichols', which would indicate that after settling at Stratfordhe, for some reason, temporarily lived at Southold or at least held property there.
     The records of Southold frequently speak of the estate of Francis Nichols left to his second wife and also to his daughter Ann, wife of Christopher Youngs, grandson of the Rev. John Youngs.
     'The Hawley Record, by Elias S. Hawley, says that Francis was probably a near relative of Col. Richard Nicoll, the first English governor of New York. While 'In Pursuit of Paradise, History of the Town of Stratford, CT, by Lewis G. Knapp, says Sgt. Francis and the future governor of NY, Richard, were brothers. In the different spelling of the name there is no special significance, since it is spelled on the Stratford records, often without the 'h', as Nicholls, Nicols, Nickols.
     That Francis Nichols was early recognized as a military man, is evidenced by an enactment of the General Court of Connecticut in 1639, the year of his first appearance in Stratford, whereby he was assigned 'to train the men and exercise them in military discipline.' He was also the original proprietor of Stratford, CT in1639.

     Francis Nichols married Margaret Bruce, daughter of George Bruce and Margaret Primrose. Francis Nichols died on 6 September 1622 at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England. He was buried on 9 September 1622 in Ampthill.

     Francis Nichols of Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England was a barrister and a man of standing as he is described in the English records as 'of the Middle Temple' and 'one of the Squires of the Bath' and as may be inferred from his own marriage and the marriage of his only daughter, Bruce, to Baron Fredheville of Staveley, Derby. He was squire of the Bath to Sir Edward Bruce.

     Isaac Nichols was born at England. He married Margery Washburn Sherman, daughter of William Sherman, on 25 February 1646. Isaac Nichols died in 1695 at Stratford, Fairfield County, CT.

     Isaac Nichols Sr. was born in England and lived and died in Stratford CT. He was the owner of much real estate, was engaged in a flourishing mercantile business and was a prominent and substantial citizen of the town. He was a representative in the October session in 1664. From 1650 to 1680, Joseph Hawley built vessels at Stratford and also sold foreign cloths, groceries, and other goods, and certain records attest that Isaac Nichols Sr., conducted a like business. He lived next to his father, his house lot running through from Main Street to Elm Street, as it is now called. Isaac Nichols made a will on 28 September 1694. It was probated 6 Nov. 1695. It mentions 'wife Margerie,' and leaves his son Benjamin 'on account of the great care he hath taken of me and my concerns and the affection I bear for him, all real estate.' It further mentions children of his daughter Mary Chancey, daughter Sarah Burritt, children of son Isaac, deceased, children of son Jonathan, deceased, children of son Ephrain, daughters Patience and Temperance and Margerie, and daughter Elizabeth Webb; also his Indian servant George. It states that he had given to all his other children as he was able at their marriage or afterwards. Name variation: Isaac Nichols Sr.

No sources were entered for any of these people (although further up the tree is a reference to Torrey's Nichols book). History of Fairfield has Isaac as bapt. in 1690, but b. c. 1684, d. in Derby on 12 Apr 1733 at age 49; he possibly married 17 Nov 1723 Agnes, widow of Abel Gunn, and daughter of Joseph and Abigail (Holbrook) Hawkins.^3,4,1 Name variation: Isaac Nichols III.

     Josiah Nichols was born on 29 January 1652/53. He married Hannah Hawley, daughter of Joseph Hawley and Catherine Birdsey, on 13 December 1678. Josiah Nichols died on 25 June 1692.

     Mary Nichols was born on 2 February 1648. She married Rev. Israel Chauncey, son of Charles Chauncey and Catherine Eyre, on 8 January 1667.

     Patience Nichols was born on 2 February 1660 at Stratford, Fairfield County, CT. She married (1) John Hubbell, son of Richard Hubbell and Elizabeth Meigs. Patience Nichols married (2) Samuel Hawley, son of Joseph Hawley and Catherine Birdsey, in 1692. Patience Nichols died on 29 September 1753 at Trumbull, Fairfield County, CT.¹ She was buried in Old Unity Burying Grounds in Trumbull, her slate marker at the cemetery has a rounded top and shoulder with the death-head symbol.¹

     Richard was governor of New York in 1664, returned to England and never married, and was described as 'a little above the medium height, of fine, stately appearance, with a fair, open face, a magnetic gray eye somewhat deep set, and hair slightly curled at the ends.'
