Joel and Miranda's home stood at 133 State Street, corner of Geneva Street in Ithaca, Tompkins, NY. His medical office was in the Clinton House (boarding house-hotel) after his original office burned in a fire. He was educated at New Haven, afterwards entered that severe military school at West Point. After which, he entered upon the study of medicine under the tuition of Dr. Reed of Charlotte Co., Virginia, and Prof. Ives, of New Haven, and graduated with great honor after attending lectures in the Medical Department of Yale University.
Dr. Hawley for a term held the Chair of Professor of Surgery in the Medical College of our own village, where his brother, Isaac A. Hawley,Esq., and family now reside.
He was chosen life member of the New York Medical Society. He was also appointed Curator of the University of Buffalo, and elected a memberof the Medical Faculty. He was delegate to meetings of the American Medical Association held in Boston in 1849, and St. Louis in1854.      Joel was born in his father's parsonage in Connecticut, as wereprobably the rest of his siblings. He graduated from Yale Medical School in 1829 and married Miranda Orcelia Phillips, daughter of an Ithaca, NY physician, in September of that same year. They were married by the Reverend Williston. Joel is buried in Ithaca Cemetery in Block C., Lot #149, Map page 67.
The obituary of Dr. Joel, as placed in the 'Geneva Gazette' on 12 August 1859, reads as follows:
'We have been much pained in noticing in the last Ithaca, 'Journal & Advertisor', the decease of Dr. J. E. Hawley, then residing in that village. Dr. Hawley was born in Bethany, Ct., and was 57 years of age atthe time of his death.
Eulogy of his character is in vain. Unusually gentlemanly in his manners, courteous and affable, and a heart ever running with warmth of feeling, he was universally respected and beloved by all who knew him.'

A letter from President Ulysses S. Grant to Isaac Tichener, son-in-law of Dr. Joel Edwin Hawley and his wife Miranda Orcelia Phillips was given to Patricia and her husband on their 30th wedding anniversary by Patricia's parents.2      A large portrait of Dr. Joel Edwin Hawley hangs in the home of Patricia Allan Vreeland and her Husband Dr. Joseph Boyle III. This painting was given to her and her husband on their 35th wedding anniversary by Patricia's parents.2 Name variation: Joel Hawley M.D.

He was born in Texas to Maj. John Blackstock Hawley, Sr., who was also acivil engineer. John, Jr. worked with him on his dams and sewage-control systems for awhile, but none of this interested him. He quit to become an inventor and at the age of twenty-eight, he had made $100,000. That was the year he became the surprised part-owner of a large fire-apparatus company. Minneapolis was the home of a concern he singled out as just the outfit to buy the newest Hawley creation, an improved pump for oilwells. The company took the invention and the inventor too. By 1928, Hawley had found he had exchanged his $100,000 for the ownership of Northern Pump.
When he was twenty-two, he came out of a tuberculosis sanitarium that way. They had shipped him away to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for absolute rest and quiet. Just out of Cornell, with stopovers at Texas Christian, Colorado College, and Texas University, the young civil engineer had decided to be an inventor, and this looked like a fine time to start. At the end of a year, the doctor sent him on his way. 'You've broken all the rules,' he told the patient, 'and you seem to have just as much TB as when you came in. But it doesn't seem to hurt you any. The inventions Hawley had sketched out -- among them a ride-control device he designed as a new sales talk for automobiles -- gave him a net profit of $27,000 and a good start as an inventor and idea man.'
There was an article written about John in the 20 Feb 1943 Saturday Evening Post with regard to his manufacturing business in Fridley, on the outskirts of Minneapolis, MN. His plant is called the Northern Pump Company and became known as the nation's foremost gunsmith developers for US Navy's big, sea-going, anti-aircraft guns. According to the 'Post' article: 'Hawley is an old hand at the 'running start'.
John Jr. married three times. I don't know if this was because his previous wives died or he divorced them.

Joseph Hawley was a yeoman and Town Recorder in Stratford. It is supposed that Joseph was born about 1603, for his seond younger sister, Elizabeth, married to Richard Booth of Stratford, CT, who was born 1607, and that she was not older than her husband. It is believed Joseph was married when he came to America or soon after, and that this first wife died leaving no children, and that he married a second wife, Katharine, before he came to Stratford, CT. Joseph and K(C)atherine had 8 children (see Hawley Pedigree). Hawley came from Parwich, Derby County, England in 1629 or 1630. He married Edward Birdsey's (?) daughter, Catherine, perhaps in Wethersfield, and came to Stratford in the first ten years. His brother,Thomas, stayed in Roxbury, his sister, Elizabeth, married Richard Boothe of Stratford and another sister, Hannah, was the wife of John Ufford in Milford.
He arrived in America around 1630 and settled in Stratford, CT. He was the second owner of the home lot where Keating Ford is located now, at Main and Stratford Avenue; he bought the lot from Richard Mills. In his will he says 'My now wife,' as though he had had a previous one, and there being no record of any other in Stratford, it must have been before he came there. This opinion is strengthened by the fact that Joseph's eldest child was born in 1647-48, when the father was apparently over forty years of age; and his sister Elizabeth Booth's eldest child was born in 1641. His will dates 1689. The place of his residence in England is revealed in his will, in which he says: 'I give to my son, Samuel Hawley, all myl ands and buildings in Parwidge in Darbyshire in Old England, to him, his heirs and assigns.' This 'Parwidge' is now Parwich, and is in Derbyshire, about nine miles northwest of Old Derby and four miles from Ashbourne, the market town, and Mr. Hawley's owning 'lands and buildings:indicates it to have been a homestead. This property was quit-claimed by Samuel Hawley to his brother Nathaniel, who gave for it a lot of meadowland in Stratford, CT., as appears on record, but no further account of it has been found. Name variation: Joseph Hawley Sr.

Stephen Hawley, Jr. made a will in 1774. It was recorded at Woodbury, CT. The Old Cemetery is near the land where his first church was built. Their tombstone was erected upon his grave 100 years after Mr. Hawley was ordained as the first preacher of the Congregational Church of Bethany,CT.
The Rev. Stephen Hawley, Jr. was a native of New Milford, CT and graduated from Yale College at New Haven in 1759. It is probable that he studied under Dr. Bellamy. Stephen was licenced to preach in 1761 by the New Haven East Association.
The Rev. Stephen Hawley was ordained and became the first minister of the Congregational Church of Bethany CT., 12 Oct 1763 at the age of 26 in an open-air ceremony about a mile South of the present church by The Rev. Dr. Bellamy of Bethlehem, CT, his brother-in-law. The Rev. Dr. Bellamy preached his ordination sermon. Mr. Hawley continued preaching there until his death, forty one years later. Stephen Hawley, Sr. left a will in 1774. It was recorded at Woodbury, CT. He left to his son, Stephen, as follows:
'I give to my son Rev. Stephen Hawley my house, barn and home lot containing about 85 acres, more or less; and also a brass pan, a copper mortar and pestel that was his grandfather's; one of my best beds and one quarter part of my bedding and my best gun, upon condition he gives to his Church in Bethany a silver pint cup equal to that Mr. Noyce gave said church, within one year after my decease.'

His first wife was Mary Bellamy, whom he married in 1762. Stephen and Mary had three children.
Stephen's second marriage was to Mehitible Hotchkiss in 1793, daughter of Capt. Joel Hotchkiss, also of Bethany, CT. Stephen and Mehitible had four children, from which our family line decends. Name variation: Rev. Stephen Hawley Jr.
