Egbert Vanborsum was in 1644 the skipper of the 'Prince William' that traded between New Haven and New Amsterdam. Later, he took charge of the ferry to Brooklyn.3 He lived in 1652 at New York.3
Egbert VanBorsum emigrated c.1638 from Emden Holland to New Amsterdam. Emden is a little town across the River Ems from Delftzijl, Groningen, The Netherlands at the mouth of the Ems River on the North Sea Coast of Ostfriesland. Emden Germany, Niedersachen Land (Lower Saxony) was part of Holland before 1744. Emden, East Friesland was under German rule but had many Dutch charateristics.
Egbert and Antie (Annetje) Hendricks (from Amsterdam and Sweden) have the distinction of having the first marriage recorded in a church record in New Amsterdam, Dec 11, 1639. In 1644 he was skipper of Prince Willem, a trading ship between New Haven and New Amsterdam. From around 1645 - 62 he ran a ferry between Manhattan and the present Fulton Street, Brooklyn, and was a tavern keeper. About 1656 he moved from Manhattan to a new house at Ferry Street, Brooklyn. The obituary of John Van Buiten appeared on 8 June 1965 in the Paterson Evening News (pg. 41.)1 His parents were Jan van Buiten and Geertje Jeltes.2 He immigrated in 1888 (but he married in Holland, so this is not right.)1
The fire of the Century Woven Label Company Mills in Prospect Park apparently happened in February 1918. The fire departments of Prospect Park, Haledon and Paterson battled the blaze, but lack of water frustrated their efforts. The mill had been build in 1917, and the damage was estimated at $15.000, not including machinery and goods. A number of houses was also destroyed, damages there were $8000.-. The cause of the fire is unknown, but an investigation will be conducted.3
