     Gideon Durphy Wood was born on 30 June 1808 at Hartwick, Otsego County, NY. He married Hannah Daley, daughter of John Daley Jr and Elizabeth Ennis, on 28 December 1830 at Florence, Huron County, OH. He died on 9 December 1890 at Springville, UT, at age 82. He was buried in Springville.
     The Wood family traveled to the Salt Lake Valley with the Heber C. Kimball Company in 1848. The family included Gideon Durphy and his wife Hannah Daley, and their children Lyman Stephen, Electra, and Elizabeth. Gideon was Captain of Herd.²

     The death certificate of Helen Paterson WOOD (wife of William INNES) named her parents as James WOOD (Mason) and Jane WOOD nee MORTON. Her birth was listed as St. Cyrus, Kincardine. A letter dated 2 Feb 1853 from James WOOD in Montrose to his sister Miss Innes in Edinburgh details the death of their father, James WOOD.

A search of records in Montrose led to the death record of Jane WOOD widow of James WOOD. She died in Montrose, Forfar 28 Jun 1862. Her record is # 224, Dist 312. she lived on Northeast Road, Montrose. Her parents were listed as James MORTON, Church Officer, deceased, and Elspet MORTON (Edwards). Ann Kemlo, daughter witnessed the death certificate. jane WOOD was 75.

A further search of Montrose deaths showed the church entry of James WOOD 8 Feb 1853, interment in rosehill Cemetary, age 71.

The 1851 Census of Montrose showed the son, James WOOD as age 40 born in Forfar, Lonforgen. Anne Kemlo, 38 wife of Thomas Kemlo of Northeast Rd also was listed. She was born in Perthshire, Longforgans. Their children were born in St. Cyrus and Montrose.

The marriage of James WOOD to Jean MORTON was found on IGI 4307. They were married in both Benholm and Bervie. In Benholm the record states James WOOd of this Parish and Jean Morton of the Parish of Bervie were contracted and after being regularly proclaimed were married May 23rd. In Bervie, James WOOD and Jean MORTON of this Parish were married 26th (1803).

The baptism of Helen Patterson Wood was found in church records - 1826, June 15th. James WOOD and Jean MORTON at Elsineur had a daughter born 6th instant and baptised Helen Paterson. The IGI lists births of children of James WOOD and Jean (Jane) MORTON Margaret b 11 Jul 1805, Longforgan, Perth; David, chr 6 Feb 1808 Lonforgan, Perth; James, chr 13 Dec 1809 Longforgan, Perth; Ann, chr 16 Jan 1812, Longforgan; Jean chr 18 Aug 1816, Benholm, Kincardine; Andrew, chr 19 Sep 1819, Benholm, Kincardine; Robert chr 2 Sep 1821, Benholm; Charles Thomson chr 21 Mar 1824, St Cyrus; William Smith chr 19 Jun 1831 St. Cyrus; Helen Paterson, chr 15 Jun 1826, Saint Cyrus, Kincardine.

The 1841 Census of Rhynie/Essie lists James WOOD, age 55, Mason; Jean age 50 and children Helen age 15 and Margaret age 4. David WOOD, age 30, was listed on the next page.

A birth of James WOOD on IGI #4307 is listed in Benholm 28 Sep 1782 to a John WOOD and Jean Graham. Given James WOOD was 71 at the time of his death in 1853, 1782 would have been the year of his birth. This parentage has to be proven.

A map of the Scottish coast shows Benholm, Bervie and St Cyrus to be close. However, Rhynie is a bit inland. Yet Helen Paterson WOOD's death certificate stated she was born at Saint Cyrus, and her marriage listed her as being in Rhynie. So evidently, the family moved.³

     James Wood was born on 13 December 1809 at Longforgan, Forfarshire, Scotland.¹ He married Isabella Dow.¹ He died on 19 November 1867 at Montrose, Scotland, at age 57.¹ He was buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Montrose.¹

     James W. Wood was born circa 1837 at England.¹ He married Mary E. Holmes, daughter of William Holmes 2nd and Emeline Cobb, circa 1860.¹

     Jane Wood was born on 25 April 1787 at Chester, Orange County, NY. She married Robertson Robertson Jr. She died on 21 December 1849 at South Centerville, NY, at age 62.

     Jonathan Wood was born on 11 October 1755. He married Mary Durland, daughter of Charles Garrett Durland and Jane Swartwout. He died on 29 March 1801 at age 45.
