     Raised in Mystic, Ms. Gilbert was the animal control officer for the Town of Groton for more than 20 years. In 1995, she attended the National Animal Control Academy, and, in 1996, she received the Paul Denault Award of Officer of the Year. She also received letters of recognition from the Navy for her work with animals. Ms. Gilbert was known to always try her best to place animals with people who would care for them. She received many letters of appreciation from the citizens of Groton for her work. She lived with her longtime companion Roland Bastien.
