Early Granger1

M, b. 1790, d. 19 August 1883
FatherWilliam Granger2 b. c 1755, d. 1 Nov 1839
MotherMary Holmes2 b. 17 Mar 1756, d. 9 Jun 1851
Early Granger was born in 1790 at Norfolk, England. He was baptized on 27 September 1792 at All Saints, Shelfanger, Norfolk, England.3 He married Mary Dougherty on 3 June 1816 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England.1 He died on 19 August 1883 at Jamaica, Queens County, NY, The Granger Genealogy has his place of death as Brooklyn.4,1 He was buried on 21 August 1883 in the Greenwood Cemetery (Lot 5546, Sec 44.)
He and Mary Granger appeared on the census of 25 July 1850 at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Robert Granger, Mary Granger, Guph Granger, Alfred Granger and Charles Henry Granger were enumerated with them.5 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Jamaica, Queens County, NY. Daniel Bailey Hendrickson, Mary Hendrickson, James Frank Hendrickson, Benjamin W Hendrickson, Mary Louise Hendrickson, Daniel Hendrickson and Charles B Hendrickson were enumerated with them. A grandchild Mary, aged 3 mo is also living with them.6
Early Granger was a veteran of Waterloo, most likely having served in the Norfolk 54th Regiment of Foot. He served under Captain George Black and was the recipient of the Waterloo Medal. The Waterloo Medal was given to all soldiers who fought at the battles of Ligny, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo in June of 1815. It was the first campaign medal ever issued by the British Army. (copy of discharge on file)

Most of the men in the family were noted for their mason skills. Early Sr. was credited for building the brick housing for the Navy Yard's first boiler, probably sometime in the late 1830s.

"On July 12, 1880 a birthday surprise party was held at the residence of his son-in-law, Daniel B. Hendricks, at Springfield, Long Island. Mr. Granger was born in Norfolk, England and served several years in the English Army. He fought at Waterloo. He emigrated to the United States in 1830. He organized the first brass band in Brooklyn in 1835. This band is now known as the 47th Regiment Band. After dinner the party assembly adjourned to the barn where the floor was prepared for dancing. Mr. Granger himself danced a hornpipe and sang a song, showing himself able to carry his many years with gaiety, grace, and a hearty cheerfulness." (excerpt Brooklyn Eagle 12 June 1880)

We hold a tattered and worn copy of Early Granger's discharge papers. It and the baptism dates correlate regarding his birth date being 1792, however this varies with later records holding his birth date to be about 1790.7

He appeared on the census of 26 July 1850 in the household of William Granger and Mary Jane Granger at Brooklyn, Kings County, NY.4 He was a grocery Clerk.
The 1880 Federal Census lists F.S. Granger's occupation as "clerk in grocery store". But, the immigration and travel for Frank Granger, also listed as F Granger and F.S. Granger, shows four arrivals from Hamilton, Bermuda, and one arrival from Havana, Cuba between 1869 and 1909. Francis brought his wife Rose, born in Bermuda, home aboard the SS Eliza Barss in June of 1869. The 1900 census lists their marriage as occurring in 1867. Does this mean he lived in Bermuda for two years? Each of the recorded trips lists a different occupation. A mechanic in 1869, printer (?) in 1871, a farmer (?) in 1874, a tailor in 1883 and unreadable in 1909. Records vary slightly on age, but close enough to assume it is the same man.2
