James Rumsey

James Rumsey was born on 23 May 1762. He married Rachel Smith, daughter of Francis Smith and Gilmore, at First Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange County, NY. He died on 23 May 1826 at age 64.
James Rumsey was a loyalist and in 1783 was forced to leave the country for Canada, where they lived in Nova Scotia. For the journey, the Rumseys were given a barrel of rum, a barrel of sugar, and a hogshead of sea biscuit. The sugar to sweeten the rum and the rum to soak the biscuit. In 1786 the Rumseys returned by sloop to Newburgh and then on to Goshen to the Rumsey homestead.
