John Fletcher Tuers Sr

M, b. 3 May 1837, d. 1906
FatherJoseph Tuers1 b. 25 Sep 1816, d. 6 Dec 1895
MotherGertrude Welsh1 b. 17 Nov 1818, d. Mar 1854
John Fletcher Tuers Sr was born on 3 May 1837 at New Jersey. He married Mary Ann Murphy in 1859 at Santa Clara, CA.2 He married Clarinda H. Parker in 1870 at San Francisco, CA.2,3,4 He married Jane (Jennie) Hanna in November 1876 at San Francisco, CA.2 He died in 1906.3
He was an actor and comedian.      As a working actor, Johnny moved almost every year. He worked as a comedian at Theater Comiqe, with Buckley's Variety, and as a minstral at Bella Union Melodian. The Bella Union was one of many on the Barbary Coast that were also called melodeans and sometimes concert saloons, but were in reality low variety and music halls. Among them in addition to the Bella Union, were the Olympic, the Pacific, Bert's New Idea Melodeon, the Adelphi, and Gilbert's Melodeon. They catered to stag audiences only, and occasionally offered very ambitious programs, but their performances, while coarse and vulgar and presented with what the Gilbert's advertisements called "freedom from constrained etiquette," were not particularly obscene. In these places there was no dancing. They charged admission, ranging from a bit, or twelve and one-half cents, to fifty cents, and their revenue was derived solely from this source and from the sale of liquor. They employed no pretty waiter girls, and discouraged drugging and robbery upon their premises. As elsewhere on the Coast, however, the female performers were required to sell drinks between their appearances on the stage, and in the curtained boxes which were a feature of each house they were permitted to do whatever in their judgment might persuade a reluctant customer to buy. In this setting John had his ups and downs, as most working actors do in their career. His most notorius moment may have come on 31 Jan 1873 when the newspapers of the day, among them the Stockton Daily Independent, reported ...James Dowling, for many years connected with the theatrical profession in California, mortally shot by Johnny Tuers, who was engaged in a scuffle with George Howard. Family members report that John Fletcher was working as a bouncer at the time.

According to the San Jose, Santa Clara 1870 Census, John owned real estate valued at $3500.

John Jasper Tuers

M, b. 1832
FatherCornelius Tuers1 b. c 1790, d. b 1850
MotherEllen1 b. c 1798
John Jasper Tuers was born in 1832 at Newark, Essex County, NJ.2 He married Delia Jane Hennion, daughter of Ezekiel Baldwin Hennion Sr and Jane Fowler.
He appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Ellen at Newark, NJ; Listed with them were John J. (age 6) and Ellen W. (age 4) Vandenburgh.3 He was an Oilcloth Manufacturer (1880 census); Jappaner (in other census); Varnish (in his death certificate.)
First appears in records in the 1850 Census Newark, NJ in the household of Ellen Tuers. Age is approximate, birth dates vary from 1829-1832. Birthplace given as NY and NJ in different Census.
We know that Delia Hennion married a John J Tuers, and that both families were possibly from Morris County. Working with a direct descendant of Cornelius Tuers, we are quite certain that John Jasper Tuers is the correct name of Delia Hennion's husband, and we know that his father's name was Cornelius. However, we have not proven that we have correctly linked John Jasper to this Cornelius. Both names appear in both Newark Census and Newark directories. Ages and locations support a correlation, but we have found no primary records to support our postulation.

Rather than omit these families, we have chosen to show this Parent/Child link in the hopes that we may find additional records that will help us prove a correct line, allowing a link with which we can provide subsequent family groups.

Children's names are taken from 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census, Newark, Essex, NJ.

Also living with the family in 1880 were:
Mary Barries, age 22, servant
her child, Carrie A, age 1
Cellia Leimons, age 25, servant

In various census, John J Tuers occupation is listed as "Jappaner". This is a 19th century term for someone who varnishes wooden furniture with a hard brilliant coat of hard lacquer. Invented in Japan.

-Jim Turse, July 2010. Name variation: John J Tuers.
