Ralph Tuers came to Riverton as a child with his family in 1878. He was city drayman in Riverton for 40 years. He was active as a civil leader, serving 30 years on the school board, and on the town board in a variety of positions for 40 years. He was also a Mason for 47 years, a lifelong member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge. He knew all of the old timers, was well known by everyone in town, and liked by many for his cheery manner.

     He and Sarah Elizabeth Tuers appeared on the census of 1880 at Montclair, Essex County, NJ. William Edward Tuers and Herbert F Tuers were enumerated with them. Living with them were Mary J. Garrabrant (29, sister (possibly sister of Sarah), possibly married Simon Tuers. She continued to live with the family, appearing again in the 1910 Census), and Susan Tuers (14, Servant, no relationship given.)⁵ He was in 1900 a farmer.³

     Ruth Marion Tuers was buried in the L.I. National Cemetery in Farmingdale. She was born on 25 July 1891.² She died on 25 June 1974 at age 82.
     Ruth served as a nurse in the military, and in private service in New York. Her burial marker notes that she served last with the US Navy. However, The Trained Nurse Review, published December 1917 lists her as being released from Reserve Army Nurse duty, and in 1919 she is assigned to Army Debarkation Station, Long Island. Actual date of death is from her death certificate which I have a copy of. The cemetery shows the date of death as 2/13/1896 and the cause as Pericardiacs.

     He appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Hartman A Vreeland and Rebecca R at Acquackanonck, Passaic County, NJ; Living with them were Cornelius Corbey (age 12) and
Catherine Roxxy (sic) (age 23, born NY.)⁴ He appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of James Van Winkle Tuers and Leah Tuers at Acquackanonck (Paterson), Passaic County, NJ; Living with them are John Vreeland (40) and Nellie Bloch, (18, born Holland.)⁵ He was in 1880 a railroad clerk; in 1900 a plumber.      He owned a cemetery lot in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in 1917.

     Walter Tuers was born on 31 May 1813 at Hoboken, NJ.² He was baptized on 27 May 1814.³ He married Julia Esther Stevens. He died on 8 September 1909 at Bethel, MI, at age 96 at the home of Cyrus Tuers.
     He and Julia Tuers appeared on the census of 1860 at Coldwater, Branch County, MI. Cornelius Tuers, Emmaline Tuers, Cyrus Tuers and Viola Tuers were enumerated with them. Cornelius is listed as Cornelia (12 yo male) en Alford is not listed; instead there is Jane (11 yo female.)⁴ He was a farmer in 1860.⁵
     Cannot confirm Walter as child, however, his gg grandson, Earl Tuers, Jr. notes that family records indicate two brothers - Joseph and John (?). These names appear to correlate with this family. We welcome correction of this record when source records are made available.

The family oral history has it that Walter had three sons all killed at Gettysburg, and therefore he moved west to start anew. We have reviewed all of the New Jersey Civil War recorded records for this family, and cannot confirm this as historically accurate. We believe that the name of Walter's first wife might be Ann Van Winkle since we hold the record for the marriage of Adeline Tuers, daughter of Walter Tuers and Ann Van Winkle in Oakville MI in 1857 to John Wesley Thurston. The record indicates that Walter is from Newark, NJ and that Adeline was born in New York in 1836. We welcome any information that would clarify this mystery.

In the 1860 Census, Jane, age 11 and in the 1870 Census, Jane, age 21 is shown living in the household. In the 1870 Census, probably Alvin Bonner, who married 1870 Emeline Sophronia Tuers - is shown as a farm laborer, age 23, living in the household.
