M, b. 1826, d. 24 July 1879
Father | John Callanan |
Mother | Mary Staunton |
Edward Callanan was born in 1826 at Craughwell, County Galway, Ireland, (or 1828.)1 He married Elizabeth Larkin, daughter of Thomas Larkin and Elizabeth (?), on 14 September 1851 (New York, NY.)1 Edward Callanan died on 24 July 1879 at East River, New York, NY.1 He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.1
Family | Elizabeth Larkin b. 1824, d. 22 Jan 1900 |

|
Edward Callanan immigrated in 1849. He and Elizabeth Larkin lived at 433 East 72nd Street, New York City, NY, (where the Cornell Medical Center is now.)1
From the Test Book records of the Emmigrant Savings Bank, Book 1, NYPL extracted 9/12/97, #6125 Dec. 29, 1853:
According to a 'Cousin Mollie' in 1961 letters written to his granddaughter Emma Callanan Roche, Edward was born in Craughwell, Ireland.
She also stated that his father was John Callanan and he was married to Mary Staunton of Claren Bridge. Mollie enclosed in this letter written in 1961 a photo of a thatched roofed cottage in Craughwell
From the letters, it appears that John and Mary also had at least one other child, named Winifred, who remained in
Ireland, most likely Mollie's ancestor, so Callanan was probably not Mollie's surname (was it Monahan?) and definitely not her married name.2
From New York City Directories between 1854-1872:
His undated business card reads as follows:
NYC Directory also lists:
CALLANAN'S EDWARD & SONS, carriage builder, 57 W 44th St near 6th Ave.
Callanan, Michael, home 433 E 72nd
Callanan, John, carriagemaker, h.236 E 36th St
Callanan, John P., carriages, h.433 E 72nd
Callanan, Thomas, carriages, h. 135 E 72nd St.
It is possible that by 1869-70 Edward had turned over the carriage building business to his son John. It is known that sons Michael and Thomas were also in the business.
Edward's death certificate states
His granddaughter Nola Kenworthy recalls that it was said in the family that he enjoyed swimming in the East River. There was no obituary in the NY Times but it was recorded there that the weather on that date was very hot.
He was buried in Calvary Cemetary, and reburied Plot 202, Section 9 in 1887 when his wife, Eliza Larkin Callanan purchased a larger family plot.

From the Test Book records of the Emmigrant Savings Bank, Book 1, NYPL extracted 9/12/97, #6125 Dec. 29, 1853:
Account opened for Edward Callanan, carriage maker and his wife Elizabeth living at 289 9th St. ' A native of Ballybone, 3 mi. from Craughwell, County Galway Ireland. Arrived 1 Aug.1848 on the ship 'Niagara' from Liverpool. His parents in Ireland, John and Mary Stanton Callanan. He is married to Elizabeth Larkin.1'
'where Grandpa Callanan was born. He was your Dad's Dad and Grandma came from Clarenbridge. Her name was Mary Staunton. I remember both of them. The house is on the road side and the building on the left was their saw pit, as they called it. They earned money for sawing timber. (The) saw mill, it's turned into a barn now. My brother Patrick is at the door, all the stables are in the back. [...] I gave my brother Patrick your letter to read. He said to tell you there is a special stone in the wall opposite the old home of Callanan and Grandpa Callanan's name carved on it. [...] It's Monahan's home now - my brother Pat, his wife and daughter live there now. He would not leave it for love or money. He told me to tell you that his grandgfather was the first man in Ireland who made the wheel of a common car, I mean 'Horse's Car'. The Scotch man was the first ever, but grandfather John Callanan invented it first, and Granded copied it from him, he was a famous carpenter.'
From the letters, it appears that John and Mary also had at least one other child, named Winifred, who remained in
Ireland, most likely Mollie's ancestor, so Callanan was probably not Mollie's surname (was it Monahan?) and definitely not her married name.2

CALLANAN'S EDWARD & SONS, carriage builder, 57 W 44th St near 6th Ave.
Callanan, Michael, home 433 E 72nd
Callanan, John, carriagemaker, h.236 E 36th St
Callanan, John P., carriages, h.433 E 72nd
Callanan, Thomas, carriages, h. 135 E 72nd St.
It is possible that by 1869-70 Edward had turned over the carriage building business to his son John. It is known that sons Michael and Thomas were also in the business.
Edward's death certificate states
'On 24 July, 1879, aged 53, he was found on 72nd Str. and Ave. A, the victim of accidental drowning in the East River, according to the results of an inquest.' (Death Certificate 324-986).
