John served during the King Philip's War (1675-1676) and received afterwards a colonial grant of 100 acres to compensate for the loss of a finger. It closed in 1690, when he was commissioned Lt. for the Albany expedition. Here he paid the ultimate price, the loss of his own life.
John was granted land in the town of Derby in 1683, belonging previously to Josiah Nichols and then Jonathan Nichols. After residing a short period in Derby, he and his wife returned to Stratford.
He resided at what was called the Old King's Highway, where his home was in 1690, when he died of Small Pox, in the war against the French and Indians, near Schenectady.
John's Will was inventoried 13 Oct 1690 and within was named Patience, his widow, as well as the ages of his children: Margery-9; Richard-6; Joshiah-2. Josiah Nichols and Samuel Hubbell, Sr. were appointed to co-administer the Estate with Patience. Later in 1706, his oldest son, Richard, obtained a colonial grant of 100 acres. Name variation: Lt.
