Rev John Urquhart1
M
Rev John Urquhart was born at Scotland.1 He married Mary McIntyre on 7 October 1776.1
The History of Upper Esk, Old North Esk (W.D. Hamilton) says 'Rev John Urquhart (d 1814) of the Parish of Cromarty, Rosshire, Scotland, was the first resident Presbyterian clergyman on the Mirimichi who came to the River in 1802 after having worked in Maine, notably in the Ellsworth area, for more than 20 years and Prince Edward Island for a year or more at the turn of the century.'
A History of Rev John Urquhart in the Archives states that the Rev John Urquhart may have graduated from King's College in Aberdeen, Scotland with a master of Arts Degree in 1769. He preached under the Presbyterian Synod in the town of Salem, MASS in June 1775, and then in Warren, Maine for 10 years. In 1785 he went to what is now Ellsworth, Maine and is mentioned in the 1790 Census. He probably stayed there until 1799.
In 1800 he went to Prince Edward Island with headquarters at Princeton, but serving a large area in the PEI including Bedeque. In 1802 he went to the Mirimichi and built a church at Moorefields. This church was burned in the 1825 fire. He died there in 1814 in or as the result of a canoe accident. His wife Mary McIntyre is said to be a relative of John Adams.
Another article from PANB states that John Urquhart was born 1740/5 in or near Chromarty or Dingwall, Scotland; d between 14 May and 1 Sep, 1814 in an accident with a canoe or as a result of an accident with a canoe in Moorefields, near Millbank, NB. He married 7 Oct 1776 Mary McIntyre (b 1756/60 in Warren, ME); d post 1814, daughter of Capt John McIntyre. Both are buried at Moorfields Cemetery.
In 'History of Bangor', ME Magazine Vol 4 'Rev John Urquhart of Union River, now Ellsworth and Surry' 'In 1784, John Urquhart, a Presbyterian Minister, went to Union River and preached for a short time. In 1785, certain residents of #6 now Ellsworth, decided to have a settled minister. Rev John Urquhart was installed there 17 Sep 1785.
Mr. Urquhart was a Scotch Presbyterian Minister who came to this country in 1774 and commenced to preach at Saint George, now Warren and Thomaston.Inn 1775 he was settled there with a salary of L20. When he came he left his wife in Scotland. In the course of a year or two, he represented his wife had died, and soon married Mary, daughter of Capt John McIntyre of St George. Many people did not believe his wife was dead, and were generally dissatisfied with his conduct, and in 1784, he was invited to resign. He declined and sued the town for his salary which he won. Then the town voted to have the Presbytery remove him. He left and went to Topsham, and thence to Untion River.
In the meantime, his first wife came to this country (Philadelphia) and after some time went to Warren and thence to Union River. where she found him and his 'second' wife and two children. She ordered the second wife away and took her place. Wife #2 returned to St George. The 1st wife remained about a year, and finding she could accomplish nothing, went away, determined to prosecute her husband in law. She went to St George, and coming back with a Deputy Sheriff, surprised her husband in bed with his second wife. The officer bade Mr. Urquhart to dress and return to the magistrate. Urquhart retired and fled but was caught and brought back. He made an arrangement to give wife #1 his farm at St George. These transactions brought matters to a head and in 1790, the Presbytery decided he was not guilty. He however gave up preaching there that same year and is said to have moved to the Mirimichi. He was at Union River in 1793. No records of the organization of any church by Rev Urquhart were ever found. He was said to have been a forcible, humorous, quaint and personal in his sermons.
