Aaron (Arie) Toers1,2
M, b. 17 July 1810, d. circa 1880
Father | Lawrence A. Toers3 b. 2 Jun 1788 |
Mother | Jannetje (Hannah) Zabriskie3 b. 28 Aug 1789 |
Aaron (Arie) Toers was born on 17 July 1810.4 He was baptized on 26 August 1810 at Reformed Dutch Church, Paramus, NJ.1,2 He married Mary E. Thorp, daughter of John Thorp, circa 1862 at Bergen, NJ.5 He died circa 1880.
He was a farmer. During the many years we have been doing research on this family, the specific date of marriage for Aaron and Mary remains elusive. There is a question as to whether or not there may have been an earlier marriage. This remains unresolved. Mary is indeed the daughter of John Thorp, as mentioned in his will as wife of Aaron Tuers. Mary Thorp is also given as the maiden name of Aaron A Turse's mother on his death certificate dated 6 Nov 1934, held in the family records file.
1850 Census, Washington Township, 30 Aug 1850, has Aaron Tures, Farmer, age 40, living with Rachel Tures, age 26, and Jane Tures, age 60. This is consistent with the approximate age of his sister, Rachel, and his mother, Jane Zabriskie. There are no other children in the home at the time.
In the 1880 Census, according to information received from Pat Wardell, Bergen County genealogist, Aaron and wife Mary lived on Werimus Road in what is now Hillsdale, NJ, and later in what is now Upper Saddle River, NJ. Aaron Tures, 68, farmer, and his wife Mary, 51, were listed in the 1880 Federal Census, living in Washington Township, Bergen County, NJ. Living with them were their children, Philip, 17; David, 14; and Minnie, age 8.
We find most of the family graves in Old Hook and Westwood Cemetery, but not of this couple. Mary Thorp's father is buried in Old Hook Cemetery.
Find A Grave website notes that there is an Aaron Turse grave is Old Paramus Reformed Church Cemetery in Ridgewood, NJ. the grave is reported badly damaged and age is 61 with death day January 20. This age does not correlate with other data available, and is not likely that of this Aaron. The best information available indicates Aaron of this record died at age 71.

Antje Toers was born in January 1742/43. She was baptized on 9 January 1742/43.2 She married Barent Van Nieukerk, son of Poulus Van Nieukerk and Helena Spier, on 5 April 1765 at New York.2,3 She died on 14 August 1821 at Bergen (now Jersey City), Hudson County, NJ, at age 78.4
Deaths of three children are given in RDC New York as 27 Aug 1769, 20 and 21 Nov 1774, but does not state names or sex.4
The marriage license was issued 2 Apr 1765 in the names of Barney Newkirk and Ann Teurs. Collegiate Church of New York, Dutch National Archives gives his name as Bernard Newkerk, and her name as Ann Toers.
Barent Newkirk was elected constable in the East Ward of New York City Oct 14, 1786 (Minutes of the Common Council , VII-497), and was reelected yearly under the name Barn't and Barnet unti 1804. He lived at No. 35 Crown Street, later known as No. 10 Liberty Street where he died September 25, 1805. His widow died in Bergen on August 14 1821, and in inventory of her estate was made there September 22, 1821 (Bergen, 3879 B). In 1832 there was a partition sale of 10 Liberty Street (Bassett vs. Baldwin, No. 1, 1832), from which many of the dates of their children are taken. The partition suit declares that Catherine (136) was the only child of Barent Newkirk and Antje Toers, so she was probably the only one to reach maturity. Catherine's parentage is also proved by the following extract (Letters of Administration, Liber 9, page 151, Hall of Records, NYC) To Nancy Newkirk the widow and Ebenezer Bassett a son-in-law of Barnet Baldwin, lat of the City of New York, Constable deceased *** dated November 5, 1805.3,4 Married name: Antje Nieukerk. Married name: Antje Van Nieukerk.

Arent Laurensen Toers1
M, d. January 1673/74
Father | Laurens Toers2 b. c 1568 |
Arent Laurensen Toers married Anna Claes. He died in January 1673/74 at Bergen, Hudson County, NJ. He was buried on 8 January 1673/74 in Bergen.3,4
He emigrated circa 1653 from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. We know that prior to 1655 Arent, his wife, and three sons, emigrated to New Amsterdam because on 15 October 1655, he volunteered to pay 6 florins in labor for the defense of New Amsterdam. On 13 April 1657, "Arent Lourissen Carpenter" was confirmed in his rights as a Small Burgher.
Roelof Jansen, a mason, died at the house of Arent Laurensen on 16 November 1657, and on the 28th he petitioned the Burgomasters and Schepens to authorize one or two persons to sell the property of Jansen at public auction "that thus might be paid the expenses of his funeral, his house rent and other known and unknown debts." Sieur Mattheus de Vos, Notary Public, and Arent Laurensen were appointed. On 12 Dec. Anna Claes appeared before theOrphanmasters and by two affidavits proved that Roelof Jansen "had given her in his liftime everyday clothing, his gun, powder-horn and what belonged to it; she also produces an account for house rent, for care taking and money advanced, amounting to 99fl. 18 st., wherein are included 7 beavers, the balance being in wampum. Anna Claes was one of the "old Memebrs" of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsteram, before 1660, and was one of the charter members of the Reformed Dutch Church of Bergen in 1664. Arent Laurensen was compelled to pay some money owing to the Orphanmasters in 1660.
Probably about 1661 he removed to Bergen, where in 1662 he signed the petition of the Magistrates of Bergen asking to be provided with a clergyman. He pledged 10 florins for the support of the clergyman. On 4 July 1663, he volunteered for the protection of Bergen, and on 21 Feb. 1664, he signed a petition for the erection of a blockhouse at Bergen. On 29 May 1664, he petitioned "that a piece of low land, close to his plantation, may be given and granted to him; he exhibits besides an extract from the minutes of the village of Bergen, whereby it appears, that the Court there has promised it to him subject to approval. The petition was granted. He also had property in New Amsterdam, for on 31 January 1664, "Arent Lauwrenzen of the Village of Bergen declared, that by virtue of a patent on 10 May 1662, he cedes, conveys, and grants to Adam Onckelbagh, Burgher and inhabitant of this city, a house and lot in the WESTside of Smee Street." In November 1665, "Arent Lawrence," signed the Oath of Allegiance to the English. On 10 Oct. 1670 six various pieces of property in and around Bergen were confirmed to Arent Laurensen. He joined the Reformed Dutch Church of Bergen 27 September 1672.1,4
