John Thorp
M, b. 27 March 1788, d. 26 June 1868

John Thorp was born on 27 March 1788 at Marlborough, Ulster County, NY. He married Maria Lent, daughter of Hendrick (Henry) Lent and Margarita Lent, in 1812 at Marlborough, Ulster County, NY. John Thorp was buried in June 1868 at Old Hook Cemetery, Westwood, Bergen County, NJ. He died on 26 June 1868 at Westwood, Bergen County, NJ, at age 80.
Montross family history lists eight children with Maria Lent, the youngest of which is William, the only child who remained in touch with his father after he remarried and moved to New Jersey. We know that his second wife who may have been either Maria Hopper, or Maria Blauvelt, was described as much younger. The Montross family history states he married 2nd Maria, and had Mary E. Thorp who married Aaron Tuers of Bergen. The Blauvelt Genealogy gives his second wife's name as Mary Blauvelt, daughter of Cornelius Blauvelt, mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Abraham Blauvelt.
Burial site is in older part of Westwood Cemetery (Old Hook Cemetery), near other Blauvelt graves, but in the Richard Hopper section, and the headstone is nearly unreadable. (EJT) Excerpt below provides brief bio from Sixth Generation
Maria Lent m. 1812 John Thorp b. 2i Mar. 1i88 in Marlborough Town, Ulster Co., N.Y., son of Peter and Jemima (Turnere) Thorp;* John d. 26 June 1868 on his farm in Westwood, Bergen Co., N.J; bur. Old Hook cem., Westwood, in the Richard Hopper plot. John married (2) Maria (Mary) ........ and had dau. Mary Thorp, who m. Aaron Tuers of Bergen Co. and lived in Westwood and Ramapo, N.J.
Shortly after the marriage of John Thorp and Maria Lent, John enlisted to fight in the War of 1812. He served as a private in the 9th Regiment New York Artillery (Militia) in Capt. Thomas C. Butler's Company and was stationed in forts of New York harbor. For his services he received land warrants. Returning to the vicinity of Peekskill, NY he and Maria resided there until about 1825, when John's church membership was transferred from the Dutch Reformed Church there to the Presbyterian Church in Yorktown, Westchester Co, The records of the Presbyterian Church there under
date of 6 Feb. 1825 state: "Mr. Thorp appeared and produced a certificate of admission from the Dutch Church, Cortland, and requested to become a member. Request granted",
But John Thorp found little comfort in the Presbyterian Church, as an entry of 13 May 1821 shows: "Mr. John Thorp having conscientious scruples on the subject of infant baptism requested dismission with a view of joining our brethren of the Baptist denomination in New York City." The Thorps lived in New York City until a short time
before 1832, when John obtained, by claims growing out of his war service, a grant of land near Spencer, N.Y. While they lived there, Maria died shortly thereafter.
John subsequently moved to Washington Township, Bergen Co., N.]., and purchased several small farms near Westwood. He married again, his second wife
being named Maria also. Her surname was probably Hopper, since John was buried in the Richard Hopper plot in Old Hook cemetery, Westwood,
John's second wife was much younger than he, a circumstance which may have contributed to a rift between John and his children by his first wife, except William, the youngest. This rift was due also to the fact that John's strictly orthodox religious
views antagonized most of his older children. William remained closer to his father and became a Baptist preacher.
HIs will was dated 29 Feb 1868, proved 6 July 1868. He passes over all of his chidren except son William and daughter Mary. John's real estate was sold for $4000. It consisted of four tracts of land in Washington Township, Bergen County, NJ.
